But something in their past exerts a mysterious power over them. And it is not just Anne Howard, the maidservant who loves and is loved by both - yet cannot find happiness with either. Travelling to the Cape, the lush jungles of Venezuela, Imperial Vienna, the Ottoman court and the Carribean, the trio seek to create perfect lives for themselves. Yet inexorably their past catches up with them and when a long-delayed time bomb threatens their ruin, the solution they devise is the most astonishing twist of all.

Cupid in Africa is the life story of Bertram Greene, a young British gentleman, a poet, an artist, a musician, a wretched student and intellectual and a bitter disappointment to his father, honorable, upright and scrupulous Major Hugh Greene. In order to gain fathers respect Bertram enlists in the army. After doing his training in India he gets sent to North Africa, where he gets involved in very tough and bloody battles. During his time in combat Bertram is learning about himself a lot and he goes through a major change, becoming a proper man of war. Percival Christopher Wren (1875 - 1941) was an English writer, mostly of adventure fiction. He is remembered best for Beau Geste, a much-filmed book of 1924, involving the French Foreign Legion in North Africa. This was one of 33 novels and short story collections that he wrote, mostly dealing with colonial soldiering in Africa. While his fictional accounts of life in the pre-1914 Foreign Legion are highly romanticized, his details of Legion uniforms, training, equipment and barrack room layout are generally accurate, which has led to unproven suggestions that Wren himself served with the legion.

This book focuses on the key issues that affect military families when soldiers are deployed overseas, focusing on the support given to military personnel and families before, during and after missions. Today’s postmodern armies are expected to provide social-psychological support both to their personnel in military operations abroad and to their families at home. Since the end of the Cold War and even more so after 9/11, separations between military personnel and their families have become more frequent as there has been a multitude of missions carried out by multinational task forces all over the world. The book focuses on three central questions affecting military families. First, how do changing missions and tasks of the military affect soldiers and families? Second, what is the effect of deployments on the ones left behind? Third, what is the national structure of family support systems and its evolution? The book employs a multidisciplinary approach, with contributions from psychology, sociology, history, anthropology and others. In addition, it covers all the services, Army, Navy/Marines, Air Force, spanning a wide range of countries, including UK, USA, Belgium, Turkey, Australia and Japan. At the same time it takes a multitude of perspectives such as the theoretical, empirical, reflective, life events (narrative) approach, national and the global, and uses approaches from different disciplines and perspectives, combining them to produce a volume that enhances our knowledge and understanding of military families. This book will be of much interest to students of military studies, sociology, war and conflict studies and IR/political science in general.

This book, a collection of Alex Danchev's essays on the theme of art, war and terror, offers a sustained demonstration of the way in which works of art can help us to explore the most difficult ethical and political issues of our time: war, terror, extermination, torture and abuse. It takes seriously the idea of the artist as moral witness to this realm, considering war photography, for example, as a form of humanitarian intervention. War poetry, war films and war diaries are also considered in a broad view of art, and of war. Kafka is drawn upon to address torture and abuse in the war on terror; Homer is utilised to analyse current talk of 'barbarisation'. The paintings of Gerhard Richter are used to investigate the terrorists of the Baader-Meinhof group, while the photographs of Don McCullin and the writings of Vassily Grossman and Primo Levi allow the author to propose an ethics of small acts of altruism. This book examines the nature of war over the last century, from the Great War to a particular focus on the current 'Global War on Terror'. It investigates what it means to be human in war, the cost it exacts and the ways of coping. Several of the essays therefore have a biographical focus.

Letters from Grace: The Story of an American Family is an intimate peek into the lives of the Quinn family. This story is akin to an anthropological excavation into what it means to be a family, celebrating said family in all its nuances. It is a story that will certainly appeal to your inner voyeur. When people die, they take with them a lifetime of secrets. Or do they? Letters from Grace begins after Grace has died. While this book begins with the death of Grace, it is not a distressing book. Death is part of life, and it is the knowledge that we gain after someone close to us dies that serves to enrich our lives, allowing us to live more fully. It is Grace’s death that catapults the reader into the heart of this family. It is where we begin: her three grown children have returned to their childhood home to go through their mother’s things and put the house on the market. As they sift through their mother’s writings, all kept in an old file cabinet, they challenge each other to learn more about their dead mother by reading her canon of articles and letters. In doing so, Savannah, Austin, and Dakota inadvertently expose a secret that challenges the core of their relationships as siblings.

If pacifists are correct in thinking that war is always unjust, then it follows that we ought to eliminate the possibility and temptation of ever engaging in it; we should not build war-making capacity, and if we already have, then demilitarization—or military abolition—would seem to be the appropriate course to take. On the other hand, if war is sometimes justified, as many believe, then it must be permissible to prepare for it by creating and maintaining a military establishment. Yet this view that the justifiability of war-making is also sufficient to justify war-building is mistaken. This book addresses questions of jus ante bellum, or justice before war. Under what circumstances is it justifiable for a polity to prepare for war by militarizing? When (if ever) and why (if at all) is it morally permissible to create and maintain the potential to wage war? In doing so it highlights the ways in which a civilian population compromises its own security in maintaining a permanent military establishment, explores the moral and social costs of militarization, and evaluates whether or not these costs are worth bearing.

Throughout Europe, medieval forces were either engaged in conflict or preparing for it through training. Arising from the need to keep the skills of warriors sharp and battle-ready, medieval jousting for knights on horseback became a widespread pastime. This book details how the culture of medieval tournaments arose around jousting and other games of combat, including both for the mounted cavalry (knights) and foot soldiers (in events such as melees) and became a central aspect of medieval court life. Readers will be further drawn in by the visual pageantry and artifacts depicted in the book's historical imagery.
