The first nonlinear optical effect was observed in the 19th century by John Kerr. Nonlinear optics, however, started to grow up only after the invention of the laser, when intense light sources became easily available. The seminal studies by Peter Franken and Nicolaas Bloembergen, in the 1960s, paved the way for the development of today’s nonlinear photonics, the field of research that encompasses all the studies, designs, and implementations of nonlinear optical devices that can be used for the generation, communication, and processing of information. The research in this book represents the culmination of a drive to build the first discharge gas laser unencumbered by the effects of diffraction. This breakthrough has been achieved through careful implementation of a discharge within a hollow-core optical fibre, and by developing measurement and analysis techniques to demonstrate laser action in an experimental optical cavity. Gas lasers were amongst the earliest laser types to be demonstrated and commercialised, but it was recognised that noble gas lasers were limited by the minimum bore diameter of the laser tube, which is set by diffraction. The advent, in 2011, of hollow optical fibres with optical and physical properties suitable for gas discharge lasers opened up the opportunity to break this diffraction limit. Using a mixture of helium and xenon gas, lasing in the mid-infrared range was achieved using a 100μm core flexible hollow optical fibre which, at 1m long, is several hundred times the diffraction-limited Rayleigh length.

The role of dielectric mirrors is very important in optics. These are used for several purposes like imaging, fabricating laser cavities, and so on. Chapter 1 discusses glass science and structures of inorganic glasses, which are commonly used for photonic devices, including oxide, fluoride, chalcogenide and mixed anion glasses. Chapter 2 covers the important thermal, viscosity and physical properties of glasses which, by nucleation and crystal growth processes can be engineered for photonic device applications. In Chapter 3, bulk glass fabrication using melting and casting and sol-gel techniques are discussed along with the fabrication principles of glass-ceramic materials, sol-gel formation and sol-gel based glass fabrication. Chapter 4 introduces the standard geometrical optics for fibre optics, Maxwell's equation for modal analysis and its importance in fibre and waveguide optics. It concludes with a detailed discussion on refractive index and its dependence on compositions, density, temperature and stress. The relationship of these properties in controlling bulk optical properties is especially emphasized. The main emphasis of Chapter 5 is on the methods of thin film fabrication using physical and chemical vapour deposition and on pulsed laser deposition including ion implantation techniques.
