The 4th International Conference on Low Cycle Fatigue and Elasto-Plastic Behaviour of Materials was held from 7-11 September 1998 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany. In response to a call for papers, nearly 200 extended abstracts from 32 countries were submitted to the organizing committee. These papers were presented at the conference as invited lectures or short contributions and as oral or poster presentation. All the papers were presented in poster form in extended poster sessions–a peculiarity of the LCF Conferences which allows an intense, thorough discussion of all contributions. Each chapter provides a comprehensive overview of a materials class or a given subject. The present work aims at engineers and scientists in the field of computational mechanics of materials. The objective of this work is to develop a suitable constitutive law and apply it to study effects of cyclic loading and geometry on the fatigue assessment. Firstly, a systematical investigation on the mechanic behaviors of an austenitic stainless steel is carried out. Different multiaxial fatigue life prediction models are studied to assess fatigue damage. The Karim-Ohno kinematic hardening model is extended to incorporate more complex mechanical behaviors. The proposed constitutive model is implemented into FEM code ABAQUS. Finally a computational fatigue analysis methodology is proposed for performing life prediction of notched components based on elastic-plastic computation.

This book covers the development of innovative computational methodologies for the simulation of steel material fracture under both monotonic and ultra-low-cycle fatigue. The main aspects are summarised as follows: i) Database of small and full-scale testing data covering the X52, X60, X65, X70 and X80 piping steel grades. Monotonic and ULCF tests of pipe components were performed (buckled and dented pipes, elbows and straight pipes). ii) New constitutive models for both monotonic and ULCF loading are proposed. Besides the Barcelona model, alternative approaches are presented such as the combined Bai-Wierzbicki-Ohata-Toyoda model. iii) Developed constitutive models are calibrated and validated using experimentally derived testing data. Guidelines for damage simulation are included. The book could be seen as a comprehensive repository of experimental results and numerical modeling on advanced methods dealing with Ultra Low Cycle Fatigue of Pipelines when subjected to high strain loading conditions.

This book presents a systematic approach in performing reliability assessment of solder joints using Finite Element (FE) simulation. Essential requirements for FE modelling of an electronic package or a single reflowed solder joint subjected to reliability test conditions are elaborated. These cover assumptions considered for a simplified physical model, FE model geometry development, constitutive models for solder joints and aspects of FE model validation. Fundamentals of the mechanics of solder material are adequately reviewed in relation to FE formulations. Concept of damage is introduced along with deliberation of cohesive zone model and continuum damage model for simulation of solder/IMC interface and bulk solder joint failure, respectively. Applications of the deliberated methodology to selected problems in assessing reliability of solder joints are demonstrated. These industry-defined research-based problems include solder reflow cooling, temperature cycling and mechanical fatigue of a BGA package, JEDEC board-level drop test and mechanisms of solder joint fatigue. Emphasis is placed on accurate quantitative assessment of solder joint reliability through basic understanding of the mechanics of materials as interpreted from results of FE simulations. The FE simulation methodology is readily applicable to numerous other problems in mechanics of materials and structures.

My wife Tatyana, daughter Mariya, son Alexandr It is well known that the mixed-mode conditions appear when the direction of the applied loading does not coincide with the orthogonal K,-Kn-Km space. In general, in the industrial practice the mixed-mode fracture and the mixed-mode crack growth are more likely to be considered the rule than the exception. Miller et al. considers that cracks can grow due to a mixture of processes (ductile and brittle), mechanisms (static, fatigue, creep) and loading modes (tension, torsion, biax ial/multiaxial). Additionally mixed-mode crack-extension can be affected by many other considerations such as artifact geometry (thin plates, thick shells, and the size, shape and orientation of the defect), environmental effects (temperature, gaseous and liquid surroundings), material state (crystallographic structure, heat treatment and route of manufacture) and stress conditions (out-of-phase and ran dom loading effects). The main feature of the mixed-mode fracture is that the crack growth would no longer take place in a self-similar manner and does not follow a universal trajec tory that is it will grow on a curvilinear path. There are various fracture criteria, which predict the behavior of cracks in brittle and ductile materials loaded in combined modes. Linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) criteria predict basi cally the same direction for crack propagation. Cracks in brittle materials have been shown to propagate normal to the maximum tangential stress. In ductile ma terials yielding occurs at the crack tip and LEFM is no longer applicable.
