To ensure industry competence in protecting the safety of workers creating engineered nanomaterials (ENMs), there must be a certification process that describes the necessary skill sets to ensure worker safety. Several federal government agencies on the national and international stage are working toward developing safety standards for workers who create EMNs. A process must be implemented to obtain validity of the certification exam and address how the exam will be given. A governing body must verify that the exam will meet certification requirements as well as which information is acquired by federal agencies. In the United States over the next few years, the majority of the workers will be of the Generation Y population. How well Generation Y workers absorb and retain information will dictate the instructional format of the certification exam. Outside-the-box instructional approaches, such as Second Life, can assist in developing the instruction format that is needed. As new ENMs are developed, it is critical to further promote the establishment of standards and certifications, which will protect human safety, prevent lawsuits, and avoid a negative public perception of nanotechnology.

Nanomaterials are of interest in many biomedical applications for potential enhancements in structural strength of bone implants, controlled drug release, improved chemical interactions, and scaffolding for cell in-growth and tissue replacement. Unfortunately, the key changes in material properties that enhance performance seem to lead in some cases to increased toxicity. By shifting the distribution of wear particle sizes to smaller individual particles, adverse effects may be created, either directly from the nanoparticle interactions or through intermediary species, such as reactive oxygen. Either way, biological activity often seems to be dependent on particle size, and deleterious side effects and workplace hazards must be evaluated and avoided.

There is a need to develop and implement more economical delivery approaches for multiple-hurdle antimicrobial interventions that can be applied to food matrices such as retail meats. Recently, potential opportunities have emerged to use nanoscience and nanoengineering principles to develop antimicrobial carriers for controlling the major foodborne pathogens such as Salmonella in meat and food preservation systems. The overall goal of this review is to explore the potential of nanoparticle-based composite systems for practical and economical antimicrobial interventions to inhibit and decontaminate such pathogens on cooked ready-to-eat (RTE) poultry and red-meat products. The opportunities for specific systems such as chitosan-nanoparticle-based nanocomposite systems containing ɛ-polylysine peptide dispersed in organic acids are discussed. A second focus of this chapter is the potential health hazards that arise from the use of nanoparticles.

Polymer matrix composites (PMCs) have been used extensively in the marine industry because of their attractive properties, including light weight, high stiffness-to-weight and strength-to-weight ratios, ease of installation on the field, high overall durability, and less susceptibility to environmental deterioration than conventional materials. However, due to their organic nature, PMCs will degrade, decompose, and yield smoke and toxic gases when subjected to fire, leading to catastrophic consequences. Therefore, the primary focus of this chapter is on the fire safety issues of PMCs and methods to improve the fire safety for marine applications. To improve these materials’ flame-retardant performance, traditional flame retardants are reviewed, including halogenated, intumescent, and intrinsic flame retardants. The flame-retardant application of nanomaterials such as nanoclay, carbon nanotubes, and polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane is then introduced. Finally, the concept of hybrid flame-retardant nanocomposite coating is presented. It is concluded that a desirable flame-retardant coating system should have such necessary characteristics, including low thermal conductivity in the thickness direction to prevent heat transfer, high in-planar thermal conductivity to dissipate heat as soon as possible, high thermal stability and heat capacity, low heat absorption, and compact char structure to prevent mass loss.
