Adapted by the Coen Brothers into an Academy Award winning film, No Country For Old Men is a dark and suspenseful novel from Cormac McCarthy, author of The Road. Llewelyn Moss, hunting antelope near the Rio Grande, stumbles upon a transaction gone horribly wrong. Finding bullet-ridden bodies, several kilos of heroin, and a caseload of cash, he faces a choice – leave the scene as he found it, or cut the money and run. Choosing the latter, he knows, will change everything. And so begins a terrifying chain of events, in which each participant seems determined to answer the question that one asks another: how does a man decide in what order to abandon his life?

In 2005, Cormac McCarthy's novel, No Country for Old Men, was published to wide acclaim, and in 2007, Ethan and Joel Coen brought their adaptation of McCarthy's novel to the screen. The film earned praise from critics worldwide and was honored with four Academy Awards', including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay. In No Country for Old Men: From Novel to Film, scholars offer varied approaches to both the novel and the award-winning film. Beginning with several essays dedicated entirely to the novel and its place within the McCarthy canon, the anthology offers subsequent essays focusing on the film, the adaptation process, and the Coen Brothers more broadly. The book also features an interview with the Coen brothers' long-time cinematographer Roger Deakins. This entertaining and enriching book for readers interested in the Coen Brothers' films and in McCarthy's fiction is an important contribution to both literature and film studies.

NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN follows three major characters: Eric Newman - an idealistic academic obsessed with the truth about the death of a left-wing poet of the 1930s for his almost finished biography of the writer; Eric's old friend Nick Burns - a federal agent with no illusions; and Odette des Chavannes - a high profile investigative journalist who is always pursuing a blockbuster story. Their objective - to recover the long-lost technology that is the key to a secret weapon for psychological warfare. Their quests intertwine in a globetrotting journey from New York to Washington, Paris, Buenos Aires and Santiago, through a labyrinth of multinational power and international corruption, where rules and stakes shift constantly and adversaries wear many masks.

Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject English - Literature, Works, grade: 1,7, University of Freiburg, course: Novel / Film Adaptation, language: English, abstract: There is no need to explain that No Country for Old Men, published in 2005 by Cormac McCarthy - as well as the eponymous movie by the Coen brothers (2007) - are extravagant works in terms of style as well as in their philosophical conceptions. Since both were only recently released there is still very few secondary literature on the complexity of McCarthy's ideas and concepts of human - or mainly American - culture. Yet they have aroused a good deal of discussions and diverse receptions not only in literary circles but also (and this is mainly for the movie) within the public. Not only that McCarthy plays with different genres in one work, confusing the readers expectations and habitual ways of reading in general, but he also seems to deconstruct everything we thought to believe about society, morality, rules of living and fate. With Anton Chigurh McCarthy introduces a totally unknown, a new type of character, who finally makes all attempts of moral or philosophical interpretations fade with the wind, just walking down the road - alive.

Cormac McCarthy is renowned as the author of popular and acclaimed novels such as Blood Meridian, All the Pretty Horses, and The Road. Throughout his career, however, McCarthy has also invested deeply in writing for film and theater, an engagement with other forms of storytelling that is often overlooked. He is the author of five screenplays and two plays, and he has been significantly involved with three of the seven film adaptations of his work. In this book, Stacey Peebles offers the first extensive overview of this relatively unknown aspect of McCarthy's writing life, including the ways in which other artists have interpreted his work for the stage and screen. Drawing on many primary sources in McCarthy's recently opened archive, as well as interviews, Peebles covers the 1977 televised film The Gardener's Son; McCarthy's unpublished screenplays from the 1980s that became the foundation for his Border Trilogy novels and No Country for Old Men; various successful and unsuccessful productions of his two plays; and all seven film adaptations of his work, including John Hillcoat's The Road (2009) and the Coen brothers' Oscar-winning No Country for Old Men (2007). Emerging from this narrative is the central importance of tragedy—the rich and varied portrayals of violence and suffering and the human responses to them—in all of McCarthy's work, but especially his writing for theater and film.

Once a country of emigration and diaspora, in the 1990s Ireland began to attract immigration from other parts of the world: a new citizenry. By the first decade of the twenty-first century, the ratio between GDP and population placed Ireland among the wealthiest nations in the world. The Peace Agreements of the mid-1990s and the advent of power-sharing in Northern Ireland have enabled Ireland's story to change still further. No longer locked into troubles from the past, the Celtic Tiger can now leap in new directions. These shifts in culture have given Irish literature the opportunity to look afresh at its own past and, thereby, new perspectives have also opened for Irish Studies. The contributors to this volume explore these new openings; the essays examine writings from both now and the past in the new frames afforded by new times.

Master's Thesis from the year 2013 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 10, , course: Literature Science, language: English, abstract: The present master thesis, ‘Cormac McCarthy’s No Country for Old Men – Narative Elements in Film and Novel’, focuses on the comparision of the narrative in the adapted film No Country for Old Men and the literary narrative in the source text by Cormac McCarthy bearing the same tite. Its purpose is to demonstrate various distinctions and similarities of both texts and to prove that the film significantly differs in inventiveness and the style of rendering the story. The theoretical part explains the concepts of narrative, time and space, Bakhtin’ s chronotope, narrative perspective, focalization and the western genre that are essential elements in the analysis of the relationship between the film and the literary fiction narratives. The results confirm the hypothesis of the thesis and demonstrate that the film narrative significantly differs in inventiveness and style the story is rendered, which also plays an important role in the fates of the characters in both stories.

Full of rich dialogue, Cormac McCarthy's insightful and philosophical play, The Sunset Limited, probes the deepest questions of human existence. A startling encounter on a New York subway platform leads two strangers to a run-down tenement where a life or death decision must be made. In that small apartment, 'Black' and 'White', as the two men are known, begin a conversation that leads each back through his own history - mining the origins of two diametrically opposing world views, they begin a dialectic redolent of the best of Beckett. White is a professor whose seemingly enviable existence of relative ease has left him nonetheless in despair. Black, an ex-con and ex-addict, is the more hopeful of the men - though he is just as desperate to convince White of the power of faith as White is to deny it. Their aim is no less than this: to discover the meaning of life. Deft, spare, and full of artful tension, The Sunset Limited by Cormac McCarthy is a beautifully crafted, consistently thought-provoking, and deeply intimate work by one of the most insightful writers of our time.

This thesis examines the performance of masculinities in the borderland films No Country for Old Men and The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada, and considers how gendered and geo-political boundaries intersect in these contemporary Westerns. These films act as sites of destabilized manhood in using the conventions of the Western genre to challenge and subvert the tropes of Western masculinity, and in this way respond to the themes of crisis and negotiation found within the field of Masculinity Studies. In analyzing the ways that the male protagonists are constructed and deconstructed through character, embodiment, and plot line, I discuss how the characters that operate outside of bounded systems are used to displace power from normative models of masculinity.
