In recent years, the Discontinuous Petrov-Galerkin (DPG) method has been the subject of significant study. It comes with a collection of desirable properties, including uniform/mesh independent stability, localizable test norms via broken test spaces, and a canonical error indicator that is incorporated as part of the solution. In this work, the DPG method is applied to problems arising in fiber optics. Accurate modeling of wave propagation in nonlinear media is an important task in fiber optics applications. Nonlinear Maxwell equations in the context of optical fibers have been studied extensively in the past. Analysis of these intensity-dependent nonlinearities are based on several simplifying approximations which result in a nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) type equation. The Schrodinger equation from a spacetime DPG perspective is discussed. In particular, a 2nd order L2 stable ultraweak formulation of the Schrodinger equation is constructed by introducing the notion of an auxiliary boundary operator. This theoretical device requires an operator-specific conforming element to develop optimal convergence rates. Numerical studies show how, modulo (expected) roundoff issues, the theoretical convergence rates are delivered. Next, the use of the DPG method in modeling and simulating optical fiber laser amplifiers with nonlinear Raman gain is studied. In this application, the interaction of two time harmonic electromagnetic fields (the signal and pump fields) governed by two weakly coupled nonlinear Maxwell equations results in the amplification phenomenon. A novel Raman gain model for describing the phenomenon is proposed and an ultra weak DPG formulation is used for the discretization of the proposed model. The nonlinearity is handled by using simple iterations between the two systems. DPG implementation of a perfectly matched layer (PML) at the exit end of the fiber is essential in this model, as is the use of sum factorization for element computations. The presented results show that the signal field indeed gains power along the fiber, thereby justifying the use of the model. Auxiliary results presented in this dissertation include the construction of DPG Fortin operators for 2nd order problems.

Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled A Novel All-optical Wavelength Exchange in Highly Nonlinear Fiber Submitted by Fung Wai Lam for the degree of Master of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in August 2007 Wavelength exchange (WE) is based on the phenomenon of four-wave mixing which realizes the simultaneous exchange of information between signals at two different wavelengths. It has high potential as an application for allowing fast data swapping in future optical communication systems. In previous studies, simultaneous conversion of two signals was demonstrated by a suitable choice of wavelengths of two pumps at the normal dispersion region and the two signals at the anomalous region with respect to the zero-dispersion wavelength λ of a fiber. However, the past experimental results showed that WE was achieved without quantitatively considering the effects of stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) and optical parametric effect simultaneously. This has motivated a further investigation on how these two nonlinear effects influence the performance of WE. Our experimental results have shown that the pump-induced Raman and Optical Parametric Amplification (OPA) effects introduce an incomplete power exchange and asymmetric power transfer characteristics which severely degrade the WE performance when one of the pumps is located in the normal dispersion region. However, the performance degradation can be avoided when the two pumps are located in the anomalous dispersion region. Our results have proved that different pump allocations will affect the performance of WE. Moreover, an analytical model describing the WE with the consideration of Raman effect is derived and compared to simulation and experimental results, which show good agreement. High performance WE should be achieved in order to satisfy the demand of commercial markets. Change of polarization can severely degrade the performance of conventional WE, so polarization-insensitive WE using polarization diversity technique is proposed. This can further enhance the extinction ratio between converted signal and its residual signal. A widely tunable range of WE is also demonstrated in this thesis, and it is shown that good exchanging performance can be maintained with the tuning range of over 15nm. Furthermore, an important application based on the principle of pulsed-pumping WE, namely all-optical packet switching, was demonstrated. This application can be used for fast and accurate data switching at specific timeslots between different wavelengths in future optical communication systems.
