"The nucleation of water vapor on ions in atmospheres of helium and argon was studied using an expansion type cloud chamber. Separation of the positive and negative ions was achieved so that the nucleation could be studied as a function of both the sign of the ionic charge and the supersaturation. A semiphenominological theory was developed as an extension of the classical theory to include the effects of the ionic charge on the nucleation process. The theoretical model of the prenucleation embryo was assumed to possess an oriented dipole surface layer with the direction of orientation dependent on the sign of the ionic charge. The theory predicts not only the increase in the nucleation rate compared to that for homogeneous nucleation and a difference in rate between positive and negative ions, the negative ions having the higher nucleation rate, but also predicts a correction term to the classical theory of homogeneous nucleation for polar molecules which exhibit an electrical double layer at the liquid surface. Comparisons between the experimental and theoretical results for homogeneous nucleation, and nucleation on both positive and negative ions were made and the results used to draw some conclusions as to the possible structure of the prenucleation embryo"--Abstract, leaf iii.

"Absolute homogeneous nucleation rates in a supersaturated mixture of water vapor and helium are measured using a long sensitive time expansion chamber and a method devised by Kassner and Allard. A pulse technique is employed to produce the nucleation in an effort to suppress disturbing influences of vapor depletion and droplet growth. The time-varying nature of the supersaturation during the nucleation pulse is taken into account by an integration over the pulse. Observed and theoretically predicted droplet concentrations are related by an assumed nucleation rate law which is adjusted until the total droplet populations predicted by integration of the assumed law agree with experiment to within ±10%. The empirical nucleation rate law that results from this analysis is compared to the theoretical results of Becker and Döring, Frenkel and Courtney. "The homogeneous nucleation of water vapor in atmospheres of helium, neon, argon, krypton, and xenon was studied using an expansion type cloud chamber. A strong dependence of the nucleation rate on the particular inert carrier gas was observed. At present the only dependence upon the nature of the carrier gas included in classical nucleation theories is a small factor arising from kinetic considerations which is in the wrong direction to explain the observations. To explain the dependence of the rate on the nature of the carrier gas, a molecular cluster model is assumed allowing inert gas atoms to occupy the cavities in a clathrate-like structure. The envelopment of the carrier gas atoms in these cavities results in a substantial interaction energy. The law of mass action is applied to this hydration reaction to achieve the dependence of the nucleation rate on the nature for the carrier gas. Since detailed computations were undertaken for only one cluster size, namely a 57 molecule four celled cluster, the results apply to only one supersaturation. The results are in reasonable agreement with experiment considering the degree of approximation made in the computations. This work indicates further the power of molecular treatments to treat subtleties in the nucleation process which cannot be effectively handled by the classical theory"--Abstract, pages iii-iv.

"Experiments were designed to determine the dependance of the heterogeneous nucleation process in liquid water on temperature and on the duration of supercooling. A specially constructed apparatus facilitated experiments with accurately controlled cooling-rates and constant temperatures. Samples of once-distilled tap-water and melted snow and hail were investigated in the form of 0.01 cc drops. The mean freezing temperatures of these samples are -20, -16 and -12 C respectively. For distilled water and for snow the mean temperature is lowered by 0.2 C for a twofold increase in the cooling-rate, for cooling rates in the range 0.5 to 4 (possibly to 10) degrees per minute. At constant temperatures only a fraction of the drops is nucleated even after 15 minutes, the number of events per interval of time decreasing rapidly to a negligible level within 8-10 minutes. Water vapor condensation is investigated by pressure and light scattering measurements in an expansion wave in the driver section of a shock tube. With this technique, onset conditions of homogeneous nucleation in pure water vapor (steam) and with small mole fractions of H2O within different carrier gases were obtained. Nucleation rate calculations are carried out with a non-isothermal pre-exponential term applied to the classical nucleation rate theory. Results for the transition region of pure vapor and small fractions of water vapor in argon, helium or air demonstrate the dependence of onset conditions on the mass fraction of the carrier gas.
