You may think you know enough about osteoporosis without reading a whole book on it. Take calcium, try not to fall down the basement steps, be prepared to shrink three or four inches as you get older, and so on, right? What else is there to know? Plenty, as we hope you'll agree after reading this book. The unfortunate fact is that although nobody wants to have osteoporosis, not enough people take steps to decrease their chances of developing it. Considering that your odds of developing osteoporosis in the United States today are around 40 percent if you're female and 10 percent if you're male, many people are leaving the fate of their bones to chance. One of our goals in writing this book is to keep you from developing osteoporosis. However, if you already have osteoporosis, our goal is to minimize the damage it does to your bones, through medication, healthy eating, and exercise. If you've already fallen and broken bones, we want to help you avoid another fall. If you have children or grandchildren, we hope that you'll nag them into taking steps to avoid falling into osteoporosis themselves. We want to help you have healthy bones. We also want you to avoid spending months in casts or in surgery after falls that break bones you really need to stay mobile. You can prevent osteoporosis or at least reduce its severity, but it takes lifestyle changes that start in childhood. Is it worth it? Ask anyone who's spent six months recovering from a broken hip. Does it take discipline? Yes-but so does learning to walk again. Nothing in life is simple, but our goal is to educate you as painlessly as possible to the high cost of osteoporosis, and the newest ways to prevent, diagnose, and treat it. Don't fall into the trap of believing that osteoporosis is inevitable; we're here to help you avoid the bad breaks.

Written by a world-recognised expert in the field of osteoporosis, who has published extensively, and is recognized as a key opinion leader. Aimed at primary care physicians, rheumatologists, orthopaedic surgeons, geriatricians, endocrinologists, and nurse specialists who wish to keep up to date in the prevention and management of osteoporosis High quality clinical photos and figures to enhance descriptions and aid diagnosis Written by a well-known author During the menopause, both the quantity and quality of bone decline rapidly, leading to a dramatic increase in the risk of fracture in postmenopausal women. Although many factors are known to be associated with osteoporotic fractures, measures to identify and treat women at risk are underused in clinical practice. Consequently, osteoporosis is frequently not detected until a fracture occurs. Identification of postmenopausal women at high risk of fracture therefore is a priority. The Handbook of Osteoporosis reviews the risk factors, and lifestyle changes that can help prevent osteoporosis and evaluates the pharmacological treatments currently available.

This book responds to the daily needs of all clinicians treating patients with osteoporosis and provides a key reference guide for any challenges that arise in clinical practice. This book also covers the genetics of the disease, clinical presentation, diagnosis, and current and upcoming treatment recommendations in accordance with the latest international guidelines. Osteoporosis is a disease in which the density and quality of bone are greatly reduced, and as bones become more porous and fragile the risk of fracture increases greatly. It is one of the most common metabolic bone diseases globally with one in three women and one in five men at risk of an osteoporotic fracture, and can result in devastating physical, psychosocial, and economic consequences. However, in spite of this osteoporosis can often be overlooked and undertreated, thus there is a real need to raise awareness of this disease.

A comprehensive, user-friendly medical yoga program designed for the management and prevention of osteoporosis, with more than four hundred illustrations. Osteoporosis leads to painful fractures due to loss of bone mass; yoga strengthens bones without endangering joints: it stands to reason that yoga is the perfect therapy for osteoporosis. Forty-four million Americans suffer from low bone mass, and osteoporosis is responsible for more than 1.5 million fractures annually. Drugs and surgeries can alleviate pain, but study after study has shown that exercise is the best treatment, specifically low-impact, bone-strengthening exercises—hence, yoga. In this comprehensive and thoroughly illustrated guide, Loren Fishman and Ellen Saltonstall, who between them have seven decades of clinical experience, help readers understand osteoporosis and give a spectrum of exercises for beginners and experts. Classical yoga poses, as well as physiologically sound adapted poses, are presented with easy-to-follow instructions and photographs. The authors welcome readers of all ages and levels of experience into the healing and strengthening practice of yoga.

René Rizzoli Menopause is the time in a woman’s life when reproductive capacity ends. Ovaries decrease their activity and the production of sex hormones ceases. This period may be associated with a large variety of symptoms affecting the cardiovascular and urogenital systems, as well as skin, hair and bone. Bone capital is accumulated by the end of the second decade and remains more or less constant up to the time of menopause. Sex hormone deficiency leads to accelerated bone turnover, a negative balance and microarchitectural deterioration, which compromises bone strength, thereby increasing bone fragility and, thus, fracture risk. By the age of 80, it is estimated that 50% of trab- ular bone will have been lost. Natural menopause occurs between the ages of 45 and 54 years all over the world. This age does not appear to have changed significantly over the centuries. In contrast, since the middle of the 19th century, life expectancy, particularly in women, has increased considerably, with most women living to the age of 80 years or more in many regions of the world. This means that at the age of 50 years, a woman will live for more than 30 years without bone protection by sex hormones. This r- resents more than one-third of a woman’s life. At the age of 50 years, the lifetime risk to experience a fracture is about 50% (ie, one out of two women will have a fracture during this period).

Since the publication of the first edition, the U.S. Surgeon General released the first-ever report on bone health and osteoporosis in October 2004. This report focuses even more attention on the devastating impact osteoporosis has on millions of lives. According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, 2 million American men have osteoporosis, and another 12 million are at risk for this disease. Yet despite the large number of men affected, the lack of awareness by doctors and their patients puts men at a higher risk that the condition may go undiagnosed and untreated. It is estimated that one-fifth to one-third of all hip fractures occur in men. This second edition brings on board John Bilezikian and Dirk Vanderschueren as editors with Eric Orwoll. The table of contents is more than doubling with 58 planned chapters. The format is larger – 8.5 x 11. This edition of Osteoporosis in Men brings together even more eminent investigators and clinicians to interpret developments in this growing field, and describe state-of-the-art research as well as practical approaches to diagnosis, prevention and therapy.
