Mercury (Hg) is one of the most toxic heavy metals, harmful to both the environment and human health. Foreword During the recent years a large number of fascinating books appeared covering the ever growing area of zeolites, zeotypes and mesoporous molecular sieves even including the emerging field of metal organic frameworks. In contrast, we decided to prepare this book focused exclusively on zeolites and zeotypes, defined as crystalline microporous materials, to show that they are still one of the most important groups of inorganic materials serving as very well defined model structures for detail kinetic and spectroscopic studies up to industrially applied catalysts for cracking, refineries, petrochemistry, synthesis of fine chemicals, and in environmental catalysis. Based on that we believe that this book on zeolites will be useful not only for students and newcomers to this field but also to all experienced researchers as a useful reference book. Preparing this book we tried to follow up the pathway starting from synthesis of zeolites and understanding of new advances in this area up to their applications in adsorption and zeolites. Authors both from academic institutions very active in this area as well as leading experts from industry were invited to prepare their contributions. While in the Introduction the editors tried to briefly outline some basic summary of the last 250 years since the description of the first natural zeolite by Swedish mineralogist Cronsted, W.J. Roth focused on the discussion of recently synthesized zeolites and zeotypes and the exploitation of the structure directing concepts for the successful synthesis of these novel structural types of zeolites. This is continued by R. Lobo, who made a great effort to evaluate the most important factors controlling the synthesis of zeolites from the point of view of the mechanism of zeolite synthesis. Many organic cations play important role in the synthesis of zeolites and J. Perez-Pariente focused his attention on their role as structure- directing agents, without which the synthesis would not proceed. In recent years synthesis of nanozeolites with particle sizes in tens of nanometers step forward. This topic is nicely covered by S. Mintova and V. Valtchev showing important factors for their synthesis together with discussing possibilities of their investigation. This is followed by the chapter of S.E. Park centered on the application of microwave irradiation to shorten the synthesis time of zeolites and to control selectivity and morphology during the synthesis. Zeolite membranes for separations and catalysis present another important area of zeolite endeavor. J. Santamaria and coworkers nicely described recent achievements in this area. Final chapter devoted to the synthesis of zeolites was written by industrial experts led by Lam. The authors focused on the critical issues of scaling up of the zeolite synthesis, which provides more detailed ideas of the critical aspects of this effort. Acidity is one of the most important features of zeolites playing the crucial role in acid-catalyzed reactions. B. Gil presented various approaches to characterization of the acidity of zeolites and discussed advantages and disadvantages of individual relevant methods. From the practical point of view main part of the book is devoted to catalysis. Chapter by R. Staudt and M. Thommes preceded these chapters describing a broad application potential of zeolites for adsorption applications. As for the catalysis, A. Martinez focused on application of zeolites in petrochemical reactions and M. Bejblová and J. Cejka highlighted many examples of catalytic potential of zeolites in fine chemical synthesis. For the first time a topic of zeolite catalysis for renewables was covered by H. van Bekkum while Z. Sobalik discussed the application of zeolites in environmental catalysis with special emphasis on deNOx processes. Industrial applications of zeolites were summarized by C. Perego and A. Carati showing many examples of the importance of zeolites in this field. Finally, C. Christensen and his group presented an emerging field of controlled synthesis of mesoporous zeolites and their catalytic potential. It was our great pleasure to work with many friends and top researchers on the preparation of this book. We would like to sincerely thank all of them for their timely reviews on selected topics and particular effort to put the book together. In spite of the energy crises and the recession, there has been a global, explosive growth in the amount of motor vehicles. In the past 50 years, the amount has increased from 50 to 700 million vehicles. For economical reasons they will probably continue to be used for a considerable number of years, despite the poor yield of internal combustion engines resulting in the inevitable production of some gaseous pollutants. The subsequent increase of gaseous pollutants in our atmosphere caused by exhaust gas from automobiles has enhanced the problem of the elimination of these pollutants produced by internal combustion engines. Catalysis has proven to be the best solution to lower the content of exhaust gas in pollutants. As its predecessors, CAPoC4 proved to be a suitable platform for discussing technological improvements and developments along with future perspectives and challenges. In the light of new results and further legislative regulations, the following topics were intensely discussed: *low light-off behaviour based on improved catalysts and substrate formulations *efficient adsorber systems for storage of hydrocarbon emissions *electrically heated catalyst systems ahead the main catalyst or, alternatively, close coupled catalysts (at the manifold of the engine) • lean DeNOx catalysts allowing for decomposition of NOx in the oxygen-rich exhaust of direct injection gasoline engines and high speed injection diesel engines or, alternatively, NOx trapping/reduction in a hybrid approach * collection and destruction of dry particulates or soot. There is no doubt that clean vehicle technology is a vital part of improving air quality. Challenges remain and call for technological answers. Catalytic air pollution control is still an area providing a considerable incentive for innovative work.

The objective of this project was to develop advanced metallic catalyst substrate materials and designs for use in off-highway applications. The new materials and designs will be used as catalyst substrates and diesel particulate traps. They will increase durability, reduce flow resistance, decrease time to light-off, and reduce cost relative to cordierite substrates. Metallic catalyst substrates are used extensively for diesel oxidation catalysts and have the potential to be used in other catalytic systems for diesel engines. Metallic substrates have many advantages over ceramic materials including improved durability and resistance to thermal shock and vibration. However, the cost is generally higher than cordierite. The most common foil material used for metallic substrates is FeCr Alloy, which is expensive and has temperature capabilities beyond what is necessary for diesel applications. The first task in the project was Identification and Testing of New Materials. In this task, several materials were analyzed to determine if a low cost substitute for FeCr Alloy was available or could be developed. Two materials were identified as having lower cost while showing no decrease in mechanical properties or oxidation resistance at the application temperatures. Also, the ability to fabricate these materials into a finished substrate was not compromised, and the ability to washcoat these materials was satisfactory. Therefore, both candidate materials were recommended for cost savings depending on which would be less expensive in production quantities. The second task dealt with the use of novel flow designs to improve the converter efficiency while possibly decreasing the size of the converter to reduce cost even more. A non-linear flow path was simulated to determine if there would be an increase in efficiency. From there, small samples were produced for bench testing. Bench tests showed that the use of non-linear channels significantly reduced the light-off temperature for diesel oxidation catalytic converters. Finally, the third task was to implement these materials and designs into a full-size converter. Hot shake testing of 13-inch diameter straight channel substrates showed no significant difference in durability between the current material and the two proposed materials. At the time that this program ended, preparations were being made for full-scale emissions testing of the new design converter for comparison to a traditional straight channel with equal catalyst loading.
