Practical Pediatric Endocrinology in a Limited Resource Setting provides a guide for managing pediatric endocrine problems in a limited resource setting, together with an outline of the bases for these disorders. The book outlines a plan for coming to a likely diagnosis in situations where resources are constrained, and suggests ways to access more sophisticated technologies for diagnostic confirmation and extension of available tools. Further extending and complementing each chapter is a series of scenarios for use as teaching and learning tools. Together with a clinical question, all chapters include a suggested outline for assessment that assists readers facing similar situations in daily practice. Each scenario works through a typical series of deductive steps used to establish a working diagnosis, while considering both a differential diagnosis and reminding readers of current knowledge around the subject matter. Provides a working knowledge of pediatric endocrinology, from the viewpoint of practical application, for residents and clinicians practicing in settings with scarce material resources Features clinically based chapters, empahsising workable diagnoses and management plans in limited resource situations Includes information on Type 1 diabetes mellitus, given its increasing prevalence worldwide Describes basic research techniques and planning, intended to foster collaboration between colleagues and other centers in clinical or basic research, which can inform clinical practice and drive innovation

Studies show improved glycemic control in pediatric patients using insulin pumps and CGMs to manage type 1 diabetes (T1D). Despite increasing use of these technologies, recent data show that the average A1c levels have increased in the United States. Sixty-one pediatric endocrinology fellows from 21 different training programs in North America were recruited to participate in an online educational curriculum about insulin pumps and CGMs. Data reported are from a pre-test assessment before beginning the curriculum. Despite consensus about the need for pediatric endocrinologists to understand these technologies, only 30% of fellows report having a formal curriculum at their institution. The mean score on 20 multiple choice questions was 36 u00b1 10%; there were no significant differences according to year of training. Mean scores were

A Karger 'Publishing Highlights 1890-2015' title Algorithms provide a logical, concise and cost-effective approach to medical reasoning: utilizing a concise, step-by-step approach based upon clues from the history, physical examination and laboratory studies, algorithms help avoid excessive unnecessary procedures and testing. The 2nd, revised edition of Practical Algorithms in Pediatric Endocrinology deals with practical issues of child growth, puberty, diseases of the endocrine glands, sexual differentiation, as well as aberrations of water, electrolyte, mineral and carbohydrate metabolism. Fifty clinical issues are covered by an algorithmic approach, breaking down long lists and tables of differential diagnosis into smaller, more manageable ones. Common clinical symptoms, signs and laboratory abnormalities are classified as they present themselves at the patient's bedside. This book is aimed at general practitioners and pediatricians, in particular those who are not exposed to pediatric endocrine problems on a daily basis, and at trainees in endocrinology and pediatric endocrinology as they acquire familiarity with clinical problem solving to make rational choices when facing clinical dilemmas.

The body of knowledge in most medical specialties is rapidly expanding, making it virtually impossible to follow all advances in clinical and basic sciences that are relevant to a given field. This is particularly true in pediatric endocrinology, at the cross-road of pediatrics, endocrinology, development and genetics. Providing abstracts of articles that report the year's breakthrough developments in the basic sciences and evidence-based new knowledge in clinical research and clinical practice that are relevant to the field, the Yearbook of Pediatric Endocrinology 2010 keeps busy clinicians and scientists, pediatric endocrinologists, and also pediatricians and endocrinologists informed on new advances. Twelve Associate Editors and their co-authors selected from several thousand papers those that brought the most meaningful new information, summarized them and provided comments to put them into perspective. The papers are classified into those that identify new genes involved in diseases, new hormones, concepts revised or re-centered, important observations for clinical practice, large-scale clinical trials, new mechanisms, new paradigms, important review articles, new fears and new hopes. Because the Yearbook is endorsed by the European Society for Paediatric Endocrinology (ESPE), its publication is linked to the annual meeting of the ESPE. The Yearbook of Pediatric Endocrinology 2009 covers the medical and scientific literature from June 2009 through May 2010.
