Practical Surgical Neuropathy-a volume in the new Pattern Recognition series- offers you a practical guide to solving the problems you encounter in the surgical reporting room. Drs. Arie Perry and Daniel J. Brat present diagnoses according to a pattern-based organization that guides you from a histological pattern, through the appropriate work-up, around the pitfalls, and to the best diagnosis. Lavish illustrations capture key neuropathological patterns for a full range of common and rare conditions, and a "visual index" at the beginning of the book directs you to the exact location of in-depth diagnostic guidance. No other single source delivers the practical, hands-on information you need to solve even the toughest diagnostic challenges in neuropathology. Includes fully searchable access to the text online at expertconsult.com, along with an image bank of over 1430 downloadable images and tables. Provides all the information essential for completing a sign-out report: clinical findings, pathologic findings, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis. Illustrates key pathologic and clinical aspects of disease entities through over 1430 superb, high-quality full-color images that help you evaluate and interpret biopsy samples. Presents a team of internationally recognized experts for authoritative and up-to-date information from leading diagnosticians in neuropathology. Features a user-friendly design with patterns color-coded to specific entities in the table of context and text and key points summarized in tables, charts, and graphs so you can quickly and easily find what you are looking for. Directs you to the chapter and specific page number of the in-depth diagnostic guidance you need through a unique, pattern-based visual index at the beginning of the book. Details key diagnostic features associated with rare and esoteric conditions in a visual encyclopedia with distinctive findings and artifacts for unusual patterns at the end of the book. Your purchase entitles you to access the web site until the next edition is published, or until the current edition is no longer offered for sale by Elsevier, whichever occurs first. Part of the in-depth and practical Pattern Recognition series, Practical Surgical Neuropathology, 2nd Edition, by Drs. Arie Perry and Daniel J. Brat, helps you arrive at an accurate CNS diagnosis by using a pattern-based approach. Leading diagnosticians in neuropathology guide you from a histological (and/or clinical, radiologic, and molecular) pattern, through the appropriate work-up, around the pitfalls, and to the best diagnosis. Almost 2,000 high-quality illustrations capture key neuropathological patterns for a full range of common and rare conditions, and a "visual index" at the beginning of the book directs you to the exact location of in-depth diagnostic guidance. Instructive algorithms provide detailed guidance based on 8 major (scanning magnification) patterns and 20 minor (high magnification) patterns – helping you narrow the range of diagnostic possibilities. A user-friendly design color-codes patterns to specific entities, and key points are summarized in tables, charts, and graphs so you can quickly and easily find what you are looking for. Sweeping content updates keep you at the forefront of recent findings regarding gliomas, embryonal neoplasms, meningiomas, pituitary region and pineal tumors, epilepsy pathology, peripheral nerve sheath tumors, neurodegenerative disorders, tumor predisposition syndromes, and much more. Improved pattern call-outs are now linked directly within the chapter, reinforcing the patterns for more efficient and complete understanding.

The 678 page book is a highly illustrated guide for the intra-operative interpretation of central nervous system surgical specimens. Both of the two principal techniques - smear preparations and frozen sections - are described in great detail. Introductory chapters address general approaches to specimen acquisition and preparation; specific clinical and radiological features; differential diagnosis by site; tumor and non-tumor entities with specific pathological features; and normal cells and tissues potentially mistaken for abnormalities. The bulk of the text describes specific clinicopathological entities, in over 80 chapters. Most of the latter present bulleted summaries of clinical and radiological features, similarly formatted sections on cytological (smear preparations) and histological (frozen sections) findings, and detailed differential diagnoses. There are over 1500 illustrations, including radiological images, operative photographs, and, largely, color photomicrographs of smears and frozen sections. Throughout, the book illustrates the practical aspects of real-time, real-world cytological and histological diagnoses. The book is a unique resource derived from the author's over three decades of experience in the intra-operative diagnosis of central nervous system lesions. Designed primarily for pathologists, it will be extremely useful for neurosurgeons as well, in their formulations of a differential diagnoses based of lesions' sites, radiological anatomy, and pathological features.

Diagnostic Surgical Neuropathology by Location, is a practical guide for all pathologists in their initial, real-time encounters with brain of spinal cord biopsies for the immediate rendering of an intraoperative diagnosis based on the squash preparations of frozen section. The book is organized with a heavy emphasis on neuroanatomic to neuropathologic relationships best defined as a given lesion’s location with regard to its contiguous macroscopic and microscopic environments. The demonstration of the lesion’s macroscopic environment would include corresponding radiographic images, diagrams, and photographs of applicable autopsy teaching specimens for comparison; the microscopic environment would be illustrated by photomicrographs expressly composed in ways to show lesions in relation to contiguous unaffected, non-diseased tissue. The chapters progress from the cranial-to-caudal segments of the neuraxis from brain to spinal cord, respectively. The topics to be included in this book consist of all lesions likely to be encountered in the course of intraoperative neuropathologic consultation; this would encompass both primary and metastatic (secondary) forms of CNS neoplasia, non-neoplastic CNS lesions (for example, demyelinative processes), and CNS infections. Introduces neuropathology via neuroanatomic context instead of type of tissue The focus on location supports better understanding of the neuropathologic study Introduces the benefits of squash preparations for intraoperative assessment of neuropathology specimens

Essentials of Surgical Pediatric Pathology is a clear and practical yet comprehensive guide for trainee pediatric pathologists and non-pediatric pathologists. Each chapter corresponds to one of the main subspecialties, such as dermatopathology, head and neck pathology, and system pathology. Practical guidance is given on handling pediatric specimens and the authors highlight the ways in which common conditions present differently in adults and children. Other chapters cover conditions typical of childhood, including soft tissue tumors and blue round cell tumors. The chapters begin with a brief clinical presentation, followed by a clear macroscopical and histological description of the principal pathologies seen in children. Up-to-date genetic and immunohistochemical information is provided, and the book includes hundreds of high-quality color images. Written and edited by leading international experts in the field, this is an essential resource for trainee pediatric pathologists, as well as general pathologists who may encounter pediatric cases.

Most textbooks on neurodegenerative disorders have used a classification scheme based upon either clinical syndromes or anatomical distribution of the pathology. In contrast, this book looks to the future and uses a classification based upon molecular mechanisms, rather than clinical or anatomical boundaries. Major advances in molecular genetics and the application of biochemical and immunocytochemical techniques to neurodegenerative disorders have generated this new approach. Throughout most of the current volume, diseases are clustered according to the proteins that accumulate within cells (e.g. tau, α-synuclein and TDP-43) and in the extracellular compartments (e.g. β-amyloid and prion proteins) or according to a shared pathogenetic mechanism, such as trinucleotide repeats, that are a feature of specific genetic disorders. Chapters throughout the book conform to a standard lay-out for ease of access by the reader and are written by a panel of International Experts Since the first edition of this book, major advances have been made in the discovery of common molecular mechanisms between many neurodegenerative diseases most notably in the frontotemporal lobar degenerations (FTLD) and motor neuron disease or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. This book will be essential reading for clinicians, neuropathologists and basic neuroscientists who require the firm up-to-date knowledge of mechanisms, diagnostic pathology and genetics of Neurodegenerative diseases that is required for progress in therapy and management.
