A little bit more than two years after the first edition, we are pleased to publish the second edition of this book. More than half of the chapters have been remodeled and completed as the result of technical improvements and recently acquired clinical data. During these two years, the number of coronary pressure measurements performed worldwide both during diagnostic and interventional procedures has increased almost exponentially. Most of the initial problems associated with this new approach have been overcome. Many colleagues have explored new research avenues and in many catheterization laboratories the method has matured from a research toy to a clinical tool. Classical indications such as the intermediate stenosis and guidance of PTCA or stent implantation, have been largely extended and coronary pressure measurement has proven to be useful in multi vessel disease, diffuse disease, long and serial stenosis, after myocardial infarction, and in many other diagnostic and interventional situations encountered in the catheterization laboratory. Quite unexpectedly, this approach has also enforced the ties with our surgical colleagues in the selection of patients suitable for minimal invasive surgery or hybride revascularization. Also in mild and intermediate left main disease, there is a role for coronary pressure measurement in the process of decision making. We would like to express our gratitude to all those many colleagues who trusted and applied this new approach for the benefit of their patients. Aalst, Eindhoven, Bernard De Bruyne. Nico H. J. Pijls. Hypertension remains a leading cause of disability and death worldwide. Self-monitoring of blood pressure by patients at home is currently recommended as a valuable tool for the diagnosis and management of hypertension. Unfortunately, in clinical practice, home blood pressure monitoring is often inadequately implemented, mostly due to the use of inaccurate devices and inappropriate methodologies. Thus, the potential of the method to improve the management of hypertension and cardiovascular disease prevention has not yet been exhausted. This volume presents the available evidence on home blood pressure monitoring, discusses its strengths and limitations, and presents strategies for its optimal implementation in clinical practice. Written by distinguished international experts, it offers a complete source of information and guide for practitioners and researchers dealing with the management of hypertension.

Pressure vessels are prone to explosion while in operation, due to possible errors in material selection, design and other engineering activities. Addressing issues at hand for a working professional, this book covers material selection, testing and design of pressure vessels which enables users to effectively use code rules and available design softwares. Relevant equation derivations have been simplified with comparison to ASME codes. Analysis of special components flange, bellow and tube sheet are included with their background. Topics on tube bend, supports, thermal stresses, piping flexibility and non-pressure parts are described from structural perspective. Vibration of pressure equipment components are covered as well.

The analytical study described in this report examines changes in the useful frequency response of short pressure probes resulting from variations in the viscous damping within the probe tube. The study is based on the use of the Bergh and Tijdeman recursion formula, which was modified to allow the addition of arbitrary amounts of viscous loss in any tube section. Results show that the useful response range can be increased with damping but is dependent on the operating temperature and pressure levels. At 300 K, only a 15-percent variation in average pressure is allowable if the useful response is to be a factor of three higher than that of an undamped probe. This variation increases to 20 or 30 percent at temperatures above 600 K. A computer program based on the modified recursion formula is given in an appendix.

We are in the midst of a blood pressure crisis. Nearly 70 million Americans have been diagnosed with hypertension and just 56 percent of them have it under control. Another 51 million (30 percent of the population) have prehypertension. Hypertension is responsible for 69 percent of first heart attacks and 77 percent of first strokes. But there is good news: High blood pressure is very responsive to lifestyle changes. And the more changes you make, the greater your results. Lower Your Blood Pressure Naturally by Sari Harrar provides readers with a comprehensive lifestyle plan. Readers will follow the Power Mineral Diet, which centers on 13 delicious powerful blood pressure-lowering foods, along with an easy, doable exercise program that combines the proven effectiveness of cardio, strength training, and yoga on blood pressure. Not only do these methods help lower blood pressure on their own, they promote fast, sustainable weight loss, which has an independent blood pressure-lowering effect. With daily meal plans, flavorful, versatile spice blends, 50 recipes, plus Power Mineral smoothies and desserts, the plan proves that a heart-healthy diet need not be bland or boring. Lower Your Blood Pressure Naturally offers one of the easiest and most effective ways to conquer hypertension yet.

A cohort of 1056 normotensive, healthy, young men initially examined in 1940 at the mean age of 24 years was followed at three periodic intervals until 1964. The cohort demonstrated little change in mean systolic blood pressure beyond age 35; a portion of this cohort showed no rise of systolic blood pressure with age. If the men are classified according to systolic blood pressure in 1940, those men in the upper quintile tend to remain high; when classified by quintile in 1951, those men at the extremes maintained their relative position for the period of the study. Predictive utility of a systolic blood pressure may be a function of its actual level as well as the age of the individual. Two factors further influenced the systolic blood pressure of this cohort, namely parental longevity and weight gain independent of arm circumference. The effect of those factors separately and in combination changed as the cohort grew older. (Author).

Charts are presented to show the pressure rise that is obtainable in an engine-cooling installation with a typical airfoil-type propeller-speed fan. The charts cover fans of the stator-rotor, rotor-stator, and rotor alone configurations, with blades incorporating both the highly cambered 65-series blower-blade sections and the conventional low-cambered airfoil sections. The effects of operation of a geared fan with rotational speeds limited by compressibility considerations and the effects of initial rotational inflow are indicated. Use of the charts to predict the pressure rise obtainable with any fan of the types considered is illustrated in a sample calculation.

While much is known about the effects of shock compression on monolithic materials, the unusual physical and chemical processes that take place when a porous medium is shocked have hardly been studied until now. Here, leading researchers in condensed matter physics, physical chemistry, metallurgy, mechanics, and materials science bridge this gap. The focus is on heterogeneous deformation mechanisms, nonequilibrium thermodynamics, and chemical processes, covering such topics as modelling the complex interplay of thermal, mechanical, and chemical processes; experimental data on pore collapse and their interpretation; and synthesis of new materials through shock-induced chemical reactions. By presenting not only the most recent results, but also the open questions that remain, these essays convey the excitement of developing a scientific basis for understanding shock compression.
