Configuring a network system to operate at optimal levels of performance requires a comprehensive understanding of the effects of a variety of system parameters on crucial metrics like connectivity and resilience to network attacks. Traditionally, omni-directional antennas have been used for communication in wireless sensor networks. In this thesis, a hybrid communication model is presented where-in, nodes in a network are capable of both omni-directional and uni-directional communication. The effect of such a model on performance in randomly deployed wireless sensor net-works is studied, specifically looking at the effect of a variety of network parameters on network performance. The work in this thesis demonstrates that, when the hybrid communication model is employed, the probability of 100% connectivity improves by almost 90% and that of k-connectivity improves by almost 80% even at low node densities when compared to the traditional omni-directional model. In terms of network security, it was found that the hybrid approach improves network resilience to the collision attack by almost 85% and the cost of launching a successful network partition attack was increased by as high as 600%. The gains in connectivity and resilience were found to improve with increasing node densities and decreasing antenna beamwidths.

Randomly deployed wireless sensor networks are becoming increasingly viable for applications such as environmental monitoring, battlefield awareness, tracking and smart environments. Such networks can comprise anywhere from a few hundred to thousands of sensor nodes, and these sizes are likely to grow with advancing technology, making scalability a primary concern. Each node in these sensor networks is a small unit with limited resources and localized sensing and communication. Thus, all global tasks must be accomplished through self-organized distributed algorithms, which also lead to improved scalability, robustness and flexibility. In this thesis, we examine the use of distributed algorithms to infer the spatial structure of an extended environment monitored by a self organizing sensor network. Based on its sensing, the network segments the environment into regions with distinct characteristics, thereby inferring a cognitive map of the environment. This, in turn, can be used to answer global queries about the environment efficiently and accurately. We consider distributed machine learning techniques for segmentation. We also present a heuristic for segmenting within boundaries to obtain distinct segments and study the variation of segmentation quality with reconstruction at different node densities and in environments of varying complexity.

"In this dissertation, we investigate location based services in wireless ad hoc networks from four different aspects - i) location privacy in wireless sensor networks (privacy), ii) end-to-end secure communication in randomly deployed wireless sensor networks (security), iii) quality versus latency trade-off in content retrieval under ad hoc node mobility (performance) and iv) location clustering based Sybil attack detection in vehicular ad hoc networks (trust). The first contribution of this dissertation is in addressing location privacy in wireless sensor networks. We propose a non-cooperative sensor localization algorithm showing how an external entity can stealthily invade into the location privacy of sensors in a network. We then design a location privacy preserving tracking algorithm for defending against such adversarial localization attacks. Next we investigate secure end-to-end communication in randomly deployed wireless sensor networks. Here, due to lack of control on sensors' locations post deployment, pre-fixing pairwise keys between sensors is not feasible especially under larger scale random deployments. Towards this premise, we propose differentiated key pre-distribution for secure end-to-end secure communication, and show how it improves existing routing algorithms. Our next contribution is in addressing quality versus latency trade-off in content retrieval under ad hoc node mobility. We propose a two-tiered architecture for efficient content retrieval in such environment. Finally we investigate Sybil attack detection in vehicular ad hoc networks. A Sybil attacker can create and use multiple counterfeit identities risking trust of a vehicular ad hoc network, and then easily escape the location of the attack avoiding detection. Indeed, the recent and fast - vances in inexpensive sensor technology and wireless communications have made the design and development of large-scale wireless sensor networks cost-effective and appealing to a wide range of mission-critical situations, including civilian, natural, industrial, and military applications, such as health and environmental monitoring, seism monitoring, industrial process automation, and battlefields s- veillance, respectively. A wireless sensor network consists of a large number of - ny, low-powered devices, called sensors, which are randomly or deterministically deployed in a field of interest while collaborating and coordinating for the successful accomplishment of their mission. These sensors suffer from very scarce resources and capabilities, such as bandwidth, storage, CPU, battery power (or - ergy), sensing, and communication, to name a few, with energy being the most critical one. The major challenge in the design process of this type of network is mainly due to the limited capabilities of the sensors, and particularly, their energy, which makes them unreliable.
