A Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) is a group of spatially dispersed sensors that monitor the physical conditions of the environment and collect data at a central location. Sensor deployment is one of the main design aspects of WSNs as this a ffects network coverage. In general, WSN deployment methods fall into two categories: planned deployment and random deployment. This thesis considers planned sensor deployment of a Mobile Wireless Sensor Network (MWSN), which is defined as selectively deciding the locations of the mobile sensors under the given constraints to optimize the coverage of the network. Metaheuristic algorithms are powerful tools for the modeling and optimization of problems. The Krill Herd Algorithm (KHA) is a new nature-inspired metaheuristic algorithm which can be used to solve the sensor deployment problem. A Multi-Agent System (MAS) is a system that contains multiple interacting agents. These agents are autonomous entities that interact with their environment and direct their activity towards achieving speci c goals. Agents can also learn or use their knowledge to accomplish a mission. Multi-agent systems can solve problems that are very difficult or even impossible for monolithic systems to solve. In this work, a modification of KHA is proposed which incorporates MAS to obtain a Multi-Agent Krill Herd Algorithm (MA-KHA). To test the performance of the proposed method, five benchmark global optimization problems are used. Numerical results are presented which show that MA-KHA performs better than the KHA by finding better solutions. The proposed MA-KHA is also employed to solve the sensor deployment problem. Simulation results are presented which indicate that the agent-agent interactions in MA-KHA improves the WSN coverage in comparison with Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), the Firefly Algorithm (FA), and the KHA.

Abstract : There are various challenges that face a wireless sensor network (WSN) that mainly originate from the limited resources a sensor node usually has. A sensor node often relies on a battery as a power supply which, due to its limited capacity, tends to shorten the life-time of the node and the network as a whole. Other challenges arise from the limited capabilities of the sensors/actuators a node is equipped with, leading to complication like a poor coverage of the event, or limited mobility in the environment. This dissertation deals with the coverage problem as well as the limited power and capabilities of a sensor node. In some environments, a controlled deployment of the WSN may not be attainable. In such case, the only viable option would be a random deployment over the region of interest (ROI), leading to a great deal of uncovered areas as well as many cutoff nodes. Three different scenarios are presented, each addressing the coverage problem for a distinct purpose. First, a multi-objective optimization is considered with the purpose of relocating the sensor nodes after the initial random deployment, through maximizing the field coverage while minimizing the cost of mobility. Simulations reveal the improvements in coverage, while maintaining the mobility cost to a minimum. In the second scenario, tracking a mobile target with a high level of accuracy is of interest. The relocation process was based on learning the spatial mobility trends of the targets. Results show the improvement in tracking accuracy in terms of mean square position error. The last scenario involves the use of inverse reinforcement learning (IRL) to predict the destination of a given target. This lay the ground for future exploration of the relocation problem to achieve improved prediction accuracy. Experiments investigated the interaction between prediction accuracy and terrain severity. The other WSN limitation is dealt with by introducing the concept of sparse sensing to schedule the measurements of sensor nodes. A hybrid WSN setup of low and high precision nodes is examined. Simulations showed that the greedy algorithm used for scheduling the nodes, realized a network that is more resilient to individual node failure. Moreover, the use of more affordable nodes stroke a better trade-off between deployment feasibility and precision.

We study the problem of barrier coverage with a wireless sensor network. Each sensor is modelled by a point in the plane and a sensing disk or coverage area centered at the sensor's position. The barriers are usually modelled as a set of line segments on the plane. The barrier coverage problem is to add new sensors or move existing sensors on the barriers such that every point on every barrier is within the coverage area of some sensors. Barrier coverage using sensors has important applications, including intruder detection or monitoring the perimeter of a region. Given a set of barriers and a set of sensors initially located at general positions in the plane, we study three problems for relocatable sensors in the centralized setting: the feasibility problem, and the problems of minimizing the maximum or the average relocation distances of sensors (MinMax and MinSum respectively) for barrier coverage. We show that the MinMax problem is strongly NP-complete when sensors have arbitrary ranges and can move to arbitrary positions on the barrier. We also study the case when sensors are restricted to use perpendicular movement to one of the barriers. We show that when the barriers are parallel, both the MinMax and MinSum problems can be solved in polynomial time. In contrast, we show that even the feasibility problem is strongly NP-complete if two perpendicular barriers are to be covered. For the barrier coverage problem in distributed settings, we give the first distributed local algorithms for fully synchronous unoriented sensors. Our algorithms achieve barrier coverage for a line segment barrier when there are enough sensors to cover the entire barrier. Our first algorithm is oblivious and terminates in n2̂ time, whereas our second one uses two bits of memory at each sensor, and takes n steps, which is asymptotically optimal. However, if the sensors are semi-synchronous, and do not share the same orientation, we show that no algorithm exists that always terminates within finite time. Finally, for sensors that share the same orientation we give an algorithm that terminates within finite time, even if all sensors are fully asynchronous. Finally, we study barrier coverage with multi-round random deployment using stationary sensors. We analyze the probability of barrier coverage with uniformly dispersed sensors as a function of parameters such as length of the barrier, the width of the intruder, the sensing range of sensors, as well as the density of deployed sensors. We propose two specific deployment strategies and analyze the expected number of deployment rounds and deployed sensors for each strategy. We present a cost model for multi-round sensor deployments, and for each deployment strategy we find the optimal density of sensors to be deployed in each round that minimizes the total expected cost. Our results are validated by extensive simulations.
