The rising number of cases in visual disorders during development, over the last decade, has strongly influenced approaches to diagnosis and rehabilitation. Moreover, the study of visual function has evolved not only within an ophthalmological, but also a neurodevelopmental framework: advances in our understanding of the maturation and plasticity of visual system functioning have further guided the progress of such approaches. As a result, the key importance of the developmental age is now widely acknowledged, from as early as the first months of life. This book provides an overview of the diagnosis and treatment of visual disorders in relation to advances in neurodevelopmental studies. The concept of early and multimodal management is discussed, with a focus on neuro-psycho-ophthalmological issues. The need for training courses aimed at updating semiological aspects and methodological and rehabilitative strategies is established, as being of significant value to clinical practice.

This book explores how music can improve skills that are impaired in some neurodevelopmental disorders, including ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder), autism, and Rett syndrome. Rehabilitation interventions based on the use of music, termed “music therapy”, are relatively widespread, but not all are supported by empirical evidence. This book offers readers an updated and scientifically grounded perspective on this theory and argues that music can be effective in promoting the acquisition of some basic mental abilities. Chapters present some of the latest research and data on how musical activities can lead children affected by neurodevelopmental disorders to improve those skills, including examples of training programs and exercises. The book will be a valuable resource for therapists, rehabilitators, psychologists, educators, musicians, researchers, as well as anyone interested in exploring the potential in music for human growth.

Globally, more than one billion people suffer some form of disability and may require assistive devices for their functioning. Only 5 to 10% of them can access some level of rehabilitation services. Assistive technology is essential while providing rehabilitation services to people with disabilities or health impairment. The first edition of this book will help professionals working in habilitation and rehabilitation services, and the chapters cover various aspects of assistive technologies. The first chapter shares existing evidence on assistive technologies (ATs) that aid in rehabilitation intervention among children and adolescents with neurodevelopmental disorders. It provides the reader with a selective overview of the newest empirical contributions available in the literature on the use of AT-based interventions for enabling adaptive skills and reducing challenging behaviors in children with neurodevelopmental disabilities. The second chapter highlights the ViEW, a computer-based assistive technology for visual impairment. ViEW (Vision Enhancement for the World) is a portable device that uses a computer vision technique to extract textual information. The product can notify the nearest objects surrounding an individual with vision loss and read aloud with audio. The product will aid in teaching students at schools for the blind. The third and fourth chapters explain the existing classification for ATs for visual impairment and various devices that can be used to perform daily living tasks. This chapter is designed for people working in eye care services, teachers, trainers in schools for the blind, community based visual rehabilitation workers, or other interested persons. Chapter five presents advanced information and communication technologies (ICT) that may be used in bathroom safety without compromising personal privacy. Bathroom safety is extremely important, especially for older persons living independently at home. The chapter reviews trends in ICT development and presents state-of-the-art solutions for safe bathing, bath accident detection and prevention.Chapter six describes the applications of assistive software products in children with autism spectrum disorders, where researchers deal with multiple factors to get closer to creating a model for children with autism for use in creating interactive apps. Chapter seven sheds light on the newest contributions in virtual-reality (VR) based intervention in neurodegenerative diseases (Alzheimer's and/or Parkinson's diseases, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or multiple sclerosis). The outcomes in the majority of VR based interventions were positive. The final chapter critically reviews the use of ATs and other relevant literature on the patient-centered design of ATs, which will ultimately help adoption pathways.

Objectives:To describe recovery process using a French inovating integrative psychosocial rehabilitation program, COMBIMOD, among people with psychiatric or neurodevelopmental disorders. Background:Meta-analysis on rehabilitation conclude stress on combinating programs together. Using diagnosis criteria are not useful to make a personalized rehabilitation program. Whatever their diagnosis, all the patients could be in an empowerment process to get recovery if only rehabitations programs are built on motivational and objective/subjective assessments. In 2009, CRISALID ( EPSM Oise, France) proposed an integrative and personalized rehabilitation program, COMBIMOD, for people with persistent and severe psychiatric disorders. Currently, using recovery process, we proposed COMBIMOD not only for people suffering from psychotic disorders but also for severe personality disorders, spectrum autistic disorders and rare genetic disorders. Materials and Methods:COMBIMOD program use motivational skills and processes, clinical tools (self and semi structured interviews), specific neuropsychological assessments (neurocognition and social cognition), functional assessments and ecological assessments in order to stress on the strenghts and preserved abilities to build an integrative personalized rehabilitation program. After these assessments, we propose psychoeducation skills, social skills, cognitive remediation programs, structured therapies (CBT, mindfullness, Shema therapy), ecological therapies. We want to illustrate this program with 3 patients suffering from: borderline disorder, Asperger syndome and Klinefelter syndrome describing all the specific assessments and processes, cognitive remediation programs and specific structured therapies. Results and Conclusions:We notice improvments in clinical, neuropsychological and functional assessments using less pharmacological treatments. Patients got their objectives in a recovered way. Psychosocial rehabiltation programs in order to be effective must be done respecting recovery and empowerment.

The increasing influence of digital media on all aspects of life, especially the use of Internet and smartphone, has not left even the field of healthcare practice untouched. Telerehabilitation, implying the use of telecommunications in rehabilitation activities, is being used widely in the treatment of communication and mental health disorders. The use of telerehabilitation services makes rehabilitation more feasible, fast, time-saving and cost-effective for people who face constraints in physically presenting themselves to healthcare providers due to extent of retardation, illness or commuting issues. It is thus a boon for the people who stay in remote areas and have no access to healthcare professionals in close vicinity. Therefore, research is underway on the optimal means to deliver telerehabilitation services both locally and globally and is now seen as a critical activity in healthcare.

Emerging disabilities are disabling conditions that are new to medical science, often medically debated, and lacking in known etiology; or those increasing in prevalence in recent years. This master's-level text is the first to eschew traditional disabilities to focus specifically on the unique characteristics and needs of individuals with disabilities such as multiple chemical sensitivity, fibromyalgia, and Lyme disease, or those currently increasing in prevalence (e.g., diabetes, autism, PTSD), and explore their implications for rehabilitation counseling practice. The text is also unique in its examination of how disability causes, types, and patterns are changing in response to current medical, social, cultural, and environmental trends and addressing necessary changes to rehabilitation policies and practices to better serve consumers with emerging disabilities. The book explores important sociological and environmental phenomena such as global warming, pollution, poverty, violence, migration patterns, addiction, and substance abuse, and the changing age demographic of the United States that has altered the landscape of disability policy and rehabilitation services in the 21st century. Each chapter provides specific examples of disabling conditions and discusses their medical, psychosocial, and vocational significance. The authors examine implications for rehabilitation assessment, planning, and placement, and emphasize changes needed to rehabilitation policy and practice. The text is replete with practical evidence-based strategies for meeting the psychosocial and vocational needs of people with emerging disabilities. Chapters include case examples, learning objectives, and discussion questions. We have great pleasure to present the latest extension of the European Institute of Health Care book series. This volume is devoted to neurodevelopmental d- orders. Again, we had the privilege to be able to work with reknowned experts who have agreed to contribute to this endeavour. The book comprises a number of topics related to psychosocial and motor development and is exemplary with regard to its comprehensiveness, as reviews of the topics presented are generally not available in a single publication. It starts with a timely and critical discussion of the genetics of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder by Dr. Buitelaar in which prospects and challenges of this approach are outlined. The next chapter by Drs. Nicolson and Fawcett deals with dyslexia and its relationship to cerebellar function providing a framework that can explain motor, speed, and phonological deficits in a unified approach. Diagnostic and treatment aspects of speech development disorders are the focus of Dr. Zorowka’s contribution in which, among other issues, the necessity of mul- professional cooperation is stressed. Dr. Sigmundsson then focuses on disorders of motor development. 6-10 % of children have motor competence well below the norm, which often persist. The clumsy child syndrome must be seen and treated as a neurological dysfunction. The relationship between tic disorders and obsessive compulsive disorder, two disturbances generally treated by different medical specialists, namely neurologists or psychiatrists, is then reviewed by Drs.
