Polymerie materials have been replacing other conventional materials like metals, glass and wood in a number of applications. The use of various types of fillers incorporated into the polymer has become quite common as a means of reducing cost and to impart certain desirable mechanieal, thermal, electrieal and magnetic properties to the polymers. Oue to the energy crisis and high priees of petrochemieals, there has been a greater demand to use more and more fillers to cheapen the polymerie materials while maintaining and/or improving their properties. The advantages that filled polymer systems have to offer are normally offset to some extent by the increased complexity in the rheological behavior that is introduced by the inclusion of the fillers. Usually when the use of fillers is considered, a compromise has to be made between the improved mechanieal properties in the solid state, the increased difficulty in melt processing, the problem of achieving uniform dispersion of the filler in the polymer matrix and the economics of the process due to the added step of compounding. It has been recognized that addition of filler to the polymer brings a change in processing behavior. The presence of the filler increases the melt viscosity leading to increases in the pressure drop across the die but gives rise to less die swell due to decreased melt elasticity.

The present book is devoted to a rapidly developing field of science which studies the behavior of viscoelastic materials under the influence of deformation~the rheology of polymers. Rheology has long been treated as the theoretical foundation of polymer processing, and from this standpoint it is difficult to overesti mate its importance in practice. Rheology plays an important role in developing our ideas on the nature of viscoelastic behavior in connection with the structural features of polymers and composites based on them. This expands the possibilities of employing rheological methods to characterize a variety of materials and greatly magnifies the interest in this field of research. The rheological properties of polymer systems are studied experimen tally, chiefly under conditions of shear and tensile strains. One explana tion is that many aspects of polymer material processing are associated with the stretching of melts or a combination of shear and tensile strains. In scientific investigations, either periodic or continuous conditions of shear deformation are employed. Each mode provides widespread infor mation. In periodic deformation, most attention is generally given to conditions with low deformation amplitudes that do not alter the structure of the polymer system during an experiment (the region of linear deformation conditions). Here the viscoelastic parameters are generally determined with respect to the frequency. Continuous deforma tion involves considerable strains, and may be attended by significant reversible and irreversible changes in the structure of a polymer.

Multiphase Flow in Polymer Processing focuses on dispersed and stratified multiphase flow in polymer processing. "The study of entangled polymer rheology both in the field of medicine and polymer processing has their major importance. Mechanical properties of biomolecules are studied in order to better understand cellular behavior. Similarly, industrial processing of polymers needs thorough understanding of rheology so as to improve process techniques. Work in this dissertation has been organized into three major sections. Firstly, numerical/analytical models are reviewed for describing rheological properties and mechanical behaviors of cytoskeleton. The cytoskeleton models are classified into categories according to the length scales of the phenomena of interest. The main principles and characteristics of each model are summarized and discussed by comparison with each other, thus providing a systematic understanding of biopolymer network modeling. Secondly, a new constitutive "toy" Mead-Banerjee-Park (MBP) model is developed for monodisperse entangled polymer systems, by introducing the idea of a configuration dependent friction coefficient (CDFC) and entanglement dynamics (ED) into the MLD "toy" model. The model is tested against experimental data in steady and transient extensional and shear flows. The model simultaneously captures the monotonic thinning of the extensional flow curve of polystyrene (PS) melts and the extension hardening found in PS solutions. Thirdly, the monodisperse MBP model is accordingly modified into polydisperse MBP "toy" constitutive model to predict the nonlinear viscoelastic material properties of model polydisperse systems. The polydisperse MBP toy model accurately predicts the material properties in the forward direction for transient uniaxial extension and transient shear flow"--Abstract, page iv.

This dissertation presents novel mechanical designs and advances in both polymer layer multiplication and extensional rheology. In Part I, advances in polymer layer multiplication include the investigation of typical thermoplastic layer multiplication extrusion dies and the redesign of such by means of experimental and computational investigation. Results show a decrease in flow instabilities including viscous encapsulation and elastic instabilities. Similarly, an innovative layer multiplication system for highly filled and elastic rubber compounds is presented. Both of these novel systems for thermoplastic and thermosetting polymer systems are validated and understood by numerical methods using ANSYS Polyflow and CFD-Post. These advances in multilayer coextrusion allow for layering of new families of rheologically complex and as well mismatched materials, thus widening the processing capabilities at the Center for Layered Polymeric Systems. In Part II, advances in extensional rheology include a newly developed extensional rheometer for achieving high Henkystrains. The Meissner Extensional Rheometer Accessory or MERA is limited in strain only by sample rupture. Experimental validation is performed using two materials, a styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) and a linear polystyrene (PS); the results are compared with those obtained using the well-known SER. Due to its design, it was possible to achieve homogeneous extensional flow up to unprecedented real Hencky strains in excess of 8. The second half of Part II covers a rheological understanding behind the mechanism of sharkskin, a melt fracture instability during extrusion. Solution-styrene-butadiene-styrene blended with various polybutadienes is studied. Experimental extrusion results show a behavior difference depending on the molecular architecture of the latter, polybutadiene. Extensional rheological techniques are used to investigate the behavior. Results show a higher sensitivity to stress relaxation after a step-strain rather than typical stress growth coefficients in extension.
