This report is a draft chapter of a `Rockburst Handbook for Canadian Hardrock Mines', being produced under the Canada/Ontario/Industry Rockburst Project. An energy balance approach is used to evaluate the causes and mechanisms of rockbursts. Coverage includes: calculation of energy components; incremental vs. bulk mining; and types of rockbursts (strain, pillar, fault-slip). A description of the EXENBRAY computer program for determining the energy released from underground excavations based on Salamon's energy formulation and utilizing the fictitious force indirect boundary element method of Bray is also included.
