This book presents an overview of the most fundamental aspects of the theory that underlies the Relational Database Model. As such it is self-contained though experience with formal models and abstract data manipulating on the one hand and with the practical use of a relational system on the other hand can help the reader. Such experience will offer the reader a better understanding of and a motivation for the different concepts, theories and results mentioned in the book. We have focussed on the most basic concepts and aspects of the relational model, without trying to give a complete overview of the state of the art of database theory. Recently a lot of books on databases in general and on the relational model in particular have been published. Most of them describe the use of database systems. 'Some clarify how information has to be structured and organized before it can be used to build applications. Others help the user in writing down his applications or in finding tricky ways to optimize the running time or the necessary space. Another category of books treat more fundamental and more general aspects such as the description of the relational model, independent of any implementation, the decomposition in normal forms or the global design of distributed databases. Few, however, are the books that describe in a formal way some of the subjects mentioned above.

1912 is the first 'golden year' in the career of D.W. Griffith. There is still a wealth of treasures waiting to be uncovered in this year. Their reappraisal is one of the aims of this sixth installment in the multi-year research project commissioned by the Pordenone Silent Film Festival in Sacile.

No other silent film director has been as extensively studied as D. W. Griffith. However, only a small group of his more than five hundred films has been the subject of a systematic analysis, and the vast majority of his other works still await proper examination. For the first time in film studies, the complete creative output of Griffith - from Professional Jealousy (1907) to The Struggle (1931) - will be explored in this multivolume collection of contributions from an international team of leading scholars in the field. Created as a companion to the ongoing retrospective held by the Pordenone Silent Film Festival, the Griffith Project is an indispensable guide to the work of a crucial figure in the arts of the nineteenth century. This volume covers the year 1913 and includes J. B. Kaufman's notes on the Griffith-supervised Liberty Belles and A Fair Rebel, as well as Griffith's first feature, Judith of Bethulia.

Recipes, notes, and photos from the show, “sumptuously presented in spectacular fashion even the blessed Lady Mary would approve of” (Chowhound). Food historian and show consultant Annie Gray gives a rich and fascinating insight into the background of the dishes that were popular between 1912 and 1926, when Downton Abbey is set—a period of tremendous change and conflict, as well as culinary development. With a foreword by executive producer and co-creator Gareth Neame, and featuring over one hundred stunning color photographs, The Official Downton Abbey Cookbook also includes a special section on hosting Downton-themed dinner parties and presents stills from the TV series and film. Notes on the etiquette and customs of the times, quotes from the characters, and descriptions of the scenes in which the foods appear provide vivid context for the dishes. The recipes are grouped by occasion, which include breakfast; luncheons and suppers; afternoon tea and garden parties; picnics, shoots and race meets; festivities; upstairs dinner; downstairs dinner; downstairs supper and tea; and the still room. Whether adapted from original recipes of the period, replicated as seen or alluded to on screen, or typical of the time, all the recipes reflect the influences found on the Downton Abbey tables. “A truly useful work of culinary history.” —Publishers Weekly “Will let you live your best Dowager Countess life.” —Food & Wine

American science fiction author Margaret St. Clair (1911–95) wrote more than 100 short stories as well as eight novels. Many of her stories appeared in such pulp magazines as Fantastic Adventures and Startling Stories, some under her own name and some under the pseudonyms Idris Seabright and Wilton Hazard. Introduced and edited by horror fiction great Ramsey Campbell, this newly assembled anthology is the only collection in print featuring short stories by the pioneering science fiction writer. Seventeen tales showcase St. Clair's ironic sense of humor and explore social and philosophical themes: "The Gardener," a condemnation of careless tree-felling and a seminal example of ecological science fiction; "The Island of the Hands," a voyage to a mysterious place that embodies the peril of wishes come true; "The Little Red Owl," a fable of supernatural horror offering a study of domestic abuse well ahead of its time; "Piety," a reflection of the haphazard nature of scientific progress; and other stories of compelling strangeness.

Carver writes in a style not unlike Bill Bryson, candidly regaling readers with tales of his worst experiences ("Some of the worst were worse than others.") as well as the best: "I enjoyed a great Abercrombie & Kent trip to China because it was a great adventure, a great itinerary, a great tour group with a great tour director, great hotels (except for a noisy Sheraton in Guilin), great weather, and great tour management. Seven greats out of seven ain't bad." He says, "Great expectations when traveling are usually the source of my greatest disappointments! I'm like the guy in a New Yorker cartoon studying a brochure telling his travel agent: 'I am so looking forward to this. I can't wait to be disappointed.'" He writes "How to Survive Disasters like Theft, Accidents, etc.," and at the risk of seeming disingenuously obvious, he provides an exhaustive list covering every possible thing that can go wrong (Getting Sick, Getting Killed, Getting Lost, etc.), offering suggestions for solving dilemmas. He concludes with "Did I fail to mention Getting Bored to Death." He describes trips with Yale Exes and travels to Italy, China, and Romania where he taught English with Global Volunteers.

Detective Inspector Hideo Aoki learns that his case against ex-Governor Tamaki—one that he has been building for months— has been dismantled. Rattled by this directive, his life begins to spiral out of control, fueled by his obsession over the case, heavy drinking, and several repercussions too close to home. In an effort to help the emotionally unstable Aoki, the police department sends him to a remote Japanese mountain retreat. What was supposed to be a relaxing stay for the recently suspended investigator instead becomes a hotbed of suspense. Soon, familiar faces, furtive glances, secret dinner conversations and lurking secrets make Aoki realize that the guests at the Kamakura Inn are not unrelated. It becomes clear that something beyond coincidence has put them together; politician, banker, suspended detective, and an elusive Go master who manipulates Aoki like his game board pieces. A sudden snowstorm traps the guests together just as Aoki begins to piece together each guest's connection to an unsolved disappearance years prior. With no communication to the outside world, or method of escape, the relaxing retreat becomes a maze of stone walls, a geisha's seduction, and bloody murders in the night. Before long, Aoki realizes that his investigation into ex-Governor Tamaki and the unsolved disappearance are part of a larger scheme. Now Aoki must survive the snowstorm and make the swift return to Tokyo to uncover a multitude of secrets, and return alone to the case against Tamaki. Even in Tokyo, the characters from the Kamakura Inn are players and Aoki once again must escape the web of deceit before it closes in around him. Rendezvous at Kamakura Inn is another thrilling tale crafted by the critically acclaimed author of Eye of the Abyss and the Inspector Anders series.
