This book provides a thorough overview of all techniques for producing self-healing construction materials. Construction materials (cement-based, bituminous, metals, and alloys) are prone to cracking, which with the progress of time can lead to compromising of the structural integrity of critical infrastructure. Self-healing materials form a new class of materials that have inbuilt engineered properties to counteract damage and repair it before it becomes critical. The methods for monitoring, modeling, and assessing self-healing are also reviewed. The final section of the book discusses the future outlook and potential extension of self-healing concepts to other materials (e.g., heritage structures and soils).

Polymer-based smart materials have become attractive in recent years due to the fact that polymers are flexible and provide many advantages compared to inorganic smart materials: they are low cost, they are easy to process, and they exhibit good performance at nano- and microscale levels. This volume focuses on a different class of polymers that are used as smart materials in the areas of biotechnology, medicine, and engineering. The volume aims to answer these questions: How do we distinguish ‘smart materials’? and How do they work? The chapters lay the groundwork for assimilation and exploitation of this technological advancement. Four of the key aspects of the approach that the authors have developed throughout this book are highlighted, namely the multidisciplinary exchange of knowledge, exploration of the relationships between multiple scales and their different behaviors, understanding that material properties are dictated at the smallest scale, and, therefore, the recognition that macroscale behavior can be controlled by nanoscale design.

In 2006 the Dutch government funded an 8 year and 20 million euro research program on Self Healing Materials. The research was not to be restricted to one material class or one particular healing approach. It was to explore all opportunities to create self healing behavior in engineering and functional materials and to bring the new materials to a level where they could be tested in real life applications. At its launch, the IOP program was the very first integrated multi-material approach to this field in the world. The research was to be conducted at Dutch universities working in collaboration with industry. With the IOP Self Healing Materials program coming to an end, this book presents the highlights of the pioneering research in the field of self healing materials in the Netherlands. Given the diversity of topics addressed, the book will be of value to all materials scientists working in the field of materials and materials by design in particular, as well as industrial engineers and developers with an interest in increasing the reliability and reducing the maintenance of their products. The book will also be an inspiration to students and show them how an unspecified concept of self healing can be translated to new materials with exceptional behavior.

Mechanical damage to bulk polymers typically begins as a microcrack, which can lead to eventual failure of the material if there is no method to inhibit crack growth. In living systems, this damage automatically initiates a healing response. Following the example of nature, self-healing polymers are engineered with the unique ability to extend the lifetime of materials by preventing damage propagation using various chemical mechanisms that are triggered by crack formation. The initial chemistry for self-healing materials employed a room temperature ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) using encapsulated dicyclopentadiene (DCPD) and wax-protected Grubbs0́9 catalyst. However the limitations of this system, including catalyst availability, cost, environmental toxicity, stability, and materials processing, motivated the search for a simpler approach to self-healing. Many chemical reactions require the use of a solvent. When an organic solvent is introduced into polymer systems, the mobility of polymer chains increases as the localized glass transition temperature is depressed. Solvent-based self-healing involves wetting of the polymer surface and resultant swelling of the bulk material, leading to interlocking of the polymer chains across a damaged crack plane to recover virgin mechanical properties. To achieve this healing in an autonomic fashion, liquid-filled microcapsules were prepared with various core components and embedded within a bulk polymer during processing. By compartmentalizing reactive fluids containing a solvent into a bulk material, in situ reactions occur upon damage in the form of a crack. A crack propagating through the polymeric material ruptures the embedded microcapsules, thus releasing solvent-based mixtures into the crack plane. The encapsulation of various solvents has been developed for use in self-healing polymers. Solvent-filled microcapsules were incorporated into thermoset matrices and thermoplastic materials such as poly(methyl methacrylate), and the healing performance is discussed in great detail. A self-healing bone cement/dental resin system based on free-radical polymerization reactions has also been studied. The development of solvent-based microcapsules led to the encapsulation of conductive materials for the repair of mechanically damaged electronic devices. Finally, additional research was carried out to examine the use of solid and protected amines for high temperature self-healing systems.

The series Topics in Current Chemistry presents critical reviews of the present and future trends in modern chemical research. The scope of coverage is all areas of chemical science including the interfaces with related disciplines such as biology, medicine and materials science. The goal of each thematic volume is to give the non-specialist reader, whether in academia or industry, a comprehensive insight into an area where new research is emerging which is of interest to a larger scientific audience. Each review within the volume critically surveys one aspect of that topic and places it within the context of the volume as a whole. The most significant developments of the last 5 to 10 years are presented using selected examples to illustrate the principles discussed. The coverage is not intended to be an exhaustive summary of the field or include large quantities of data, but should rather be conceptual, concentrating on the methodological thinking that will allow the non-specialist reader to understand the information presented. Contributions also offer an outlook on potential future developments in the field. Review articles for the individual volumes are invited by the volume editors. Readership: research chemists at universities or in industry, graduate students.
