From the Wall Street Journal bestselling author of The Paper Magician Series comes the enthralling climax of a cataclysmic war between monstrous creatures. Sandis has finally freed herself from her master and his plans to use her as a vessel for the ancient beast Kolosos. But her master has found a new, impossible vessel: Sandis's brother, Anon--a brother she long thought dead. Kolosos is ancient, massive, and seemingly unbeatable. Fortunately, Sandis has her own monster--an ethereal fire horse that she can summon at will. In addition, she and Rone may have discovered the secret to defeating Kolosos: ancient lore that details the creation of magic. It could be the key to victory and the key to saving Anon. The price is steep, and Sandis is willing to pay it. Rone is not, and his attempt to save her only pulls them apart. As both are tested in ways they never expected, Sandis and Rone will need to determine the sacrifices they are willing to make. If their efforts are not enough, their city will fall...just as the ancient city beneath it already has.

Spirit and Soul: Odyssey of a Black Man in America, Volume One, an engaging, edifying autobiography by Theodore Kirkland, offers critical insight and politically cognizant commentary on the past, future and real-time reality of race relations in America. His long career in law enforcement – some 39 years total as a military police officer, Buffalo police officer, New York State parole board commissioner and adjunct professor – begins by happenstance in the Air Force. Instead of being sent to gunnery school as he requested, he is ordered to report to the Army Military Police Academy in Camp Gordon, Georgia. Kirkland’s narrative voice in this page turner is clear, self-effacing and relentlessly candid – unapologetic for the black and white of his experience, and cautionary in his instruction for navigation through the gray. Yet in every syllable, there is a remarkable, palpable love – for his family, friends and community – and unyielding commitment to upholding the Constitutional promise that “all men are created equal.” Spirit and Soul: Odyssey of a Black Man in America, Volume One is at once witty and wise; poignant, wistful and meticulously illustrative of an American perspective too often shadowed by stereotypes that contend that Black men contribute primarily to the prison population. It also is an important chronology of the evolution of African American life and experience from Jim Crow to contemporary “Post-racial America.”

2020 Foreword INDIES Book of the Year Awards Winner, Silver (Political and Social Sciences) Winner of the Montaigne Medal, awarded to "the most thought-provoking books" The first book to explore a shocking yet all-too-common type of wrongful conviction--one that locks away innocent people for crimes that never actually happened. Rodricus Crawford was convicted and sentenced to die for the murder by suffocation of his beautiful baby boy. After years on death row, evidence confirmed what Crawford had claimed all along: he was innocent, and his son had died from an undiagnosed illness. Crawford is not alone. A full one-third of all known exonerations stem from no-crime wrongful convictions. The first book to explore this common but previously undocumented type of wrongful conviction, Smoke but No Fire tells the heartbreaking stories of innocent people convicted of crimes that simply never happened. A suicide is mislabeled a homicide. An accidental fire is mislabeled an arson. Corrupt police plant drugs on an innocent suspect. A false allegation of assault is invented to resolve a custody dispute. With this book, former New York City public defender Jessica S. Henry sheds essential light on a deeply flawed criminal justice system that allows--even encourages--these convictions to regularly occur. Smoke but No Fire promises to be eye-opening reading for legal professionals, students, activists, and the general public alike as it grapples with the chilling reality that far too many innocent people spend real years behind bars for fictional crimes.

All of Crystalia is in danger. The Prophecy says that only the five princesses can unite to break the Dark Consul’s Power. But what happens when one of them goes missing? Blaze is an Ember Mage, skilled with fire magic and with a temper just as hot. She’s desperate for a way to prove herself but never imagined a royal messenger would come knocking on her door. King Jasper III, ruler of all Crystalia, needs someone who works outside the system to search for his missing heir, and Blaze fits that description perfectly. After all, Princess Sapphire is no damsel-in-distress, so the king is sure something must be terribly wrong. To find the missing princess, Blaze must travel to the worst of all possible places: the Frostbyte Reach—a cold, miserable nightmare of a place for any Ember Mage. On her quest, Blaze soon finds out the situation is far worse than the king feared. The entire mountain is under siege by an army of bloodthirsty orcs who are crafting a weapon of incredible power. Frozen tundra or not, orcs or not, Blaze has accepted the call. Now she must prove to King Jasper—and to herself—that the king's trust was not misplaced.

I respectfully request, sir, that you devote full attention to this matter in his memory and on behalf of a city that has long forgotten his sacrifice...While I judge you not for the past sins of White Pines, I do charge you with atonement for his unsolved murder now that you are in the position of privilege to address this matter. Newly appointed White Pines, North Carolina, Police Chief William H. Parker is baffled by the mysterious death of a patrolman almost fifty years ago. George A. Hartley's body was discovered in an elevator shaft; and although reliable outside sources deemed it a homicide, local authorities consistently propagated it was accidental. His death comes to Parker's attention from a letter of a surviving son, asking him to investigate recurring rumors and harder realities long ignored by former chiefs. This letter serves as a summons to this haunted past. What Chief Parker finds is that the police department's case file no longer exists. Photographs of the crime scene are missing. Inquest records have disappeared. There is not only the question of who murdered the patrolman but also why the case was buried so deeply in the town's dark history. Based on a true story, In Summons to the Past portrays the timeless sorrow resurrected in the surviving son and the challenges of a case complicated by time. Is Chief Parker better off leaving some harder truths to the past? Will his conscience prevail in his steadfast belief that justice, even when delayed, is still justice? Through his perseverance, he is led to a surviving person of interest haunted by the murder, one obsessed with the book of Ecclesiastes now in the mid-winter of his years.

This book contains three separate stories, each built on the need of psychiatric intervention to enable the protagonists return to an appropriate level of normality. The girl who wandered experiences traumatic family eventsevents that set Patty at odds with family values and family directives. Her wandering becomes illicit and dangerous to her well-being. An elderly couple reaches out to her and encourages her to seek care. Doctor Stephen Moke successfully intervenes and helps Patty develop an insightful view of her own life and realize that the desertions in her life were partly her own. The Woman Who Was Silent involves the murder of a neighbor-friend. After Susans arrest, her refusal to respond to anyone, including the judge, required intervention. At the judges request, Doctor Stephen Moke visited her in the jail. His gentle, wise, and compassionate interview becomes the heart of Susans story, which is not revealed until her court trial, following a year of psychiatric hospitalization. Doctor Mokes further questioning during her hospitalization fills in the blanks and completes his trial testimony, revealing the strange story of her life and the reason for the murder. In The Woman Who Stood Tall, a policeman gives a Native American woman an undeserved summons on his belief she stole from a grocery store. An appearance in court and possible jail time are of grave concern to Jalee and her husband. Her internist recommends they seek the intervention of Doctor Stephen Moke. Doctor Moke reviews the harsh racial prejudice in Jalees early life, including the tragic death of her mother and older brother through the fault of two unremorseful Caucasians. Doctor Mokes letter to the court sets the stage for Mokes continuing care of Jalee. Native American beliefs, especially regarding the Great Spirit, enter and influence their ongoing therapeutic relationship.

In the 1950s the Romani people lived on the brink of great change. In their bright wooden wagons they journeyed between horse-fairs and traditional stopping places - stoic, humorous and wild, often poverty-stricken but protective of their freedom - on the fringes of a society that was soon to close around them. Dominic Reeve describes his life among the Gypsies: the feuds and fairs, the joyful muddy squalor of an outdoor existence. He evokes an unforgettable cast of fireside characters - bold children, fierce matriarchs and dandyish villains in snap-brimmed hats - and tells of sharp deals done and rings run round country policemen, of love affairs, dances and open-air feasting. Smoke in the Lanes is the vivid, memorable record of a disappeared world.
