Interactions among solid particles in molecular scale are extended to aggregations in the macro scale and related to settling, flow and rheological behavior of the suspensions in a coherent, sequential manner. The classical concept of solid particles is extended to include nanoparticles, colloids, microorganisms and cellular materials. The flow of these systems is investigated under pressure, electrical, magnetic and chemical driving forces in channels ranging from macro-scale pipes to micro channels. Transporting liquids, especially crude oils, refinery products and water through pipelines always occur in turbulent mode through strategic pipelines. Massive amounts of the pumping power are lost during the transportation due to the power dissipation caused by the turbulent structures formed in the flow media. Due to the velocity difference between the laminar sub layer and the core of the turbulent flow system, eddies are formed. The introduction of minute quantities of certain chemical additives is proven to have the ability to improve the flow inside pipelines carrying liquids in a turbulent regime. In some cases, it is necessary to increase the transported liquid flow rate in built pipelines to avoid any extra costs and time spend on building new pipelines to have the same flow improvement needed. In the present book, an experimental approach towards understanding the relation between soluble and insoluble drag reducing agents, is introduced.

A IUTAM symposium on "Measuring Techniques in Gas-Liquid Two Phase Flows" was held on July 5-8, 1983 in Nancy, France. This topic in cluded instrumentation for steam-water and liquid-vapor flows but strictly excluded measuring techniques for gas or liquid flows with solid particles. The top priority in the paper selection was given to presentations of new methods which had been substantiated by theoretical modeling, calibration tests and comparison tests with other techniques. Examples of experimental resul ts obtained with the proposed instrumentation had to be displayed. However the interpretation of these results in terms of two-phase flow or heat transfer modeling did not fall wi thin the scope of the meeting. Thirty four papers were presented during the Symposium and 79 participants coming from Canada, European countries, Japan and the United States attended the sessions. They represented not only Universities but also state agencies and private companies. After the meeting each paper was peer-reviewed by at least three referees. A gas-liquid flow is probably the most important form of multiphase flow, and is found widely in a whole range of industrial applications. These include pipeline systems for the transport of oil-gas mixtures, evaporators, boilers, condensers, submerged combustion systems, sewerage treatment plants, air-conditioning and refrigeration plants, and cryogenic plants. Gas-liquid systems are also important in the meteorology and in other natural phenomena. Flows of solids suspended in gases are important in pneumatic conveying and in pulverized fuel combustion. Fluidized beds may also be regarded as a form of gas-solid flow. Liquid-liquid flows are the flow of oil-water mixtures in pipelines and in liquid-liquid solvent extraction mass transfer systems. The most important application of liquid-solid flow is in the hydraulic conveying of solid materials. Liquid-solid suspensions also occur in crystallization systems, and in hydro-cyclones. Historically, probably the most commonly studied cases of two-phase flow are in large-scale power systems.
