Various stochastic models for fatigue crack propagation under either constant amplitude or spectrum loadings have been investigated. These models are based on the assumption that the crack growth rate is a lognormal random process, including the general lognormal random process, lognormal white noise process, lognormal random variable, and second moment approximations, such as Weibull, gamma, lognormal and Gaussian closure approximations. Extensive experimental data have been used for the correlation study with various stochastic models. These include fastener hole specimens under fighter or bomber spectrum laodings and center-cracked specimens under constant amplitude loads. The data sets for the fastener hole specimens cover adequately different loading conditions, environments, load transfers and crack size range. It is shown that the white noise process is definitely not a valid model for fatigue crack propagation.

The book describes a systematic stochastic modeling approach for assessing thermal-fatigue crack-growth in mixing tees, based on the power spectral density of temperature fluctuation at the inner pipe surface. It shows the development of a frequency-temperature response function in the framework of single-input, single-output (SISO) methodology from random noise/signal theory under sinusoidal input. The frequency response of stress intensity factor (SIF) is obtained by a polynomial fitting procedure of thermal stress profiles at various instants of time. The method, which takes into account the variability of material properties, and has been implemented in a real-world application, estimates the probabilities of failure by considering a limit state function and Monte Carlo analysis, which are based on the proposed stochastic model. Fatigue crack growth can be a significant problem in steel structures that are subjected to a large number of repeated load cycles during their service lives. Uncertainty in fatigue behavior arises from the random nature of the service load, environmental conditions, material properties and other factors. Stochastic approaches to model this uncertainty can lead to improved fatigue-resistant design or in-service inspection and maintenance policies. This report generalizes the stochastic model of uncertainty in crack growth under constant amplitude loading by introducing a random noise process with arbitrary (generally non-Gaussian) marginal distribution and correlation structure. A computationally efficient method based on the rainflow method of stress identification is proposed for handling broad-band stress processes in analyzing stochastic crack propagation. The impact of uncertainty in flaw detection and measurement capabilities on in-service structural condition assessment and reliability-based service life prediction also is investigated. The proposed method is applied in a time-dependent reliability analysis of a steel miter gate at the Emsworth Lock and Dam that suffered severe deterioration from corrosion-fatigue. The predicted fatigue behavior is consistent with observations of damage over a sixty-year service life, providing some confirmation of the use of stochastic fatigue analysis in structural condition assessment and service life prediction.

Over a period of several years the field of probabilistic mechanics and com putational mechanics have progressed vigorously, but independently. With the advent of powerful computational hardware and the development of novel mechanical techniques, the field of stochastic mechanics has progressed in such a manner that the inherent uncertainty of quite complicated systems can be addressed. The first International Conference on Computational Stochastic Mechanics was convened in Corfu in September 1991 in an ef fort to provide a forum for the exchanging of ideas on the current status of computational methods as applied to stochastic mechanics and for identi fying needs for further research. This book is an attempt to provide a uni?ed methodology to derive models for fatigue life. This includes S-N, ?-N and crack propagation models. This is not a conventional book aimed at describing the fatigue fundamentals, but rather a book in which the basic models of the three main fatigue approaches, the stress-based, the strain-based and the fracture mechanics approaches, are contemplated from a novel and integrated point of view. On the other hand, as an alternative to the preferential attention paid to deterministic models based on the physical, phenomenological and empirical description of fatigue, their probabilistic nature is emphasized in this book, in which stochastic fatigue and crack growth models are presented. This book is the result of a long period of close collaborationbetween its two authors who, although of di?erent backgrounds, mathematical and mechanical, both have a strong sense of engineering with respect to the fatigue problem. When the authors of this book ?rst approached the fatigue ?eld in 1982 (twenty six years ago), they found the following scenario: 1. A probabilistic fracture mechanics approach for predicting the failure life distribution due to subcritical crack growth is presented. A state-of-the-art crack propagation method is used in a Monte Carlo simulation to generate a distribution of failure lives. The crack growth failure model expresses failure life as a function of stochastic parameters including environment, loads, material properties, geometry, and model specification errors. A stochastic crack growth rate model that considers the uncertainties due to scatter in the data and model misspecification is proposed. The rationale for choosing a particular type of probability distribution for each stochastic input parameter and for specifying the distribution parameters is presented. The approach is demonstrated through a probabilistic crack growth failure analysis of a welded tube in the Space Shuttle Main Engine. A discussion of the results from this application of the methodology is given.
