There is increasing pressure on multinational companies to conduct business ethically and foster prosperity in countries from which they source raw materials. In response, many have started reporting on their social impact. However, for many companies, the challenges faced in sourcing countries and origin communities are unfamiliar. Trying to assess, monitor, and report on them is unprecedented. Questions about what should be measured and how remain across sectors. In this climate of uncertainty, not all assessment efforts have resulted in useful information regarding the challenges about which they intended to report. This project uses the attention based view of the firm (Ocasio, 1997) to analyze how strategy emerges in transnational environments of change. It explores how decision makers at a multinational company developed a baseline social needs assessment for international sourcing markets, in order to understand how information moves up organizational hierarchies. Then, it studies how decision makers pay attention to new information when developing strategy. The company's coffee supply chain in a selected sourcing country serves as a sub-case for understanding the producer- and market-level challenges decision makers intended to address with the assessment. I conducted research at multiple points in the company's international sourcing hierarchy, and at strategy workshops in which decision makers and NGO allies developed the framework. This research contributes to theory on attention by showing how social discourses influence processes of attention allocation and strategy development in environments of change. Findings indicate that discourses embedded in organizational attention structures shape decision makers' attention allocation through rigid patterns of linguistic cues. These cues guide actors away from new, or emergent issues, and back to existing issues in the process of searching for answers. As a result, the.

The purpose of the study was to identify the challenges faced in testing web based applications by the information technology firms in Nairobi. The study was guided by the following research questions: What is the role of software testing in the successful implementation of web based applications? What are the challenges faced in testing web based applications? What are the strategic responses Organizations should adapt to challenges of web based software testing? The study adopted a descriptive research design. Descriptive research design was chosen because it enables generalisation of the findings. The study population comprised of the 65 Computer Software firms with operations within Nairobi City. The data was collected between November 15th and December 10th 2013. The study adopted the use of standardized questionnaire to collect data from the respondents because it allows the collection of a large amount of data from a sizeable population in a highly economic way. The data analysis involved measures of central tendency (means, frequencies) and correlations. The data was presented by tables and figures. The study shows that the roles played by software testing in successful implementation of web based applications in order of strength include; ensuring that the correct content is displayed, improving of performance, ensuring user friendliness, ensuring that multiple platforms are compatible and it also help mitigate information security weakness. Similarly software testing ensures that client needs are met, reliability of applications, creates opportunities for better systems, ensures understanding of the characteristics of web applications and saves time by identifying defects early. The study highlighted challenges that face testing of web based applications to be; integration of heterogeneous components, lack of expertise in web based application test, difficulty in establishing software testing standards and difficulty in using automated testing in that order. Difficulty in ensuring complete test coverage presents a challenge but only to a limited level. On the other hand the study lack sufficient empirical findings to indicate whether test planning present a challenge or not. The other challenges so identified were lack of benefits of testing, failure of client to know what is good hence unrealistic demands, slow internet connection, constant change in demand and non-supportive organizational structures. The study identified involving users in the testing process, having the skilled internal software testing team trained, operating an independent web application testing teams and using automated testing tools in that order as the strategies that can be adopted to address the challenges of web based software testing. On the other hand the web application software testing/offshore testing presented mixed feelings with three variables (ability of outsourcing to provide for more business efficiency, minimize operating costs and provide stringent quality assurance processes) tested having too high neutral responses to be conclusive. The use of this strategy could only be applicable to gain expert advice, enhance skills of software testing team, improves in-house personnel focus, to save time and to provide quick turnaround time. The other identified strategies were continuous training of testing staff, outsourcing to provide relevant experience, side by side development of test plans with the specification documents and use of onsite testing. After identifying the role of software testing in the successful implementation of web based applications, it is upon the organizations which develop web based applications to ensure that all their products are properly and effectively tested because without adequate testing, there is a greater risk that an application will inadequately deliver what was expected by the business users. The study also shows that the challenges can be both internal and external. It is within the reach of the organization to eliminate or reduce the internal weaknesses through strategic investments. On the external, challenges such as the heterogeneity and standardization should present an opportunity for the organization to develop standard products. After identifying the strategic responses it is upon the organization to reevaluate its objectives, mission and vision to re-strategize in line with its long term strategic objectives. The current study was primarily exploratory. The degree of effects would greatly enrich the field of knowledge on this subject. Extending this study to other firms outside Nairobi would also be welcome to test whether the findings can be extended to the entire country and sector.

This paper studier the various strategies adopted by five oil-and-gas companies in Canada in response to the problem of climate change and the ratification of the Kyoto Accord. These strategies were studied by conducting face-to-face and follow-up phone interviews with various individuals from five companies in Canada's oil-and-gas sector. Each interview centred around the following issues: the company's view of change, available organizational slack, managerial response to uncertainty, the perceived complexity of both climate change and the Kyoto Accord, the perception of loss versus gain and threat versus opportunity, the identification of the major players within climate change, and stakeholder analysis. Firms in the canadian oil-and-gas sector are faced with increasing challenges in the form of climate-change regulation and sustainable strategic challenges. Drawing upon sustainable-strategy literature and the Resource-Based View (RBV) of the firm, this paper explores and discusses the strategies taken by three distinct groups within this sector. The three groups discussed will be Proactive, Reactive, and a new group, Transitional. Each of the firms within a group has many items in common with its peers, and these similarities set them apart from the firms in the other groups. The study provides evidence that each of the groups of firms reacted to the changes in challenges of climate change differently. Each firm within a grouping attempted to overcome the challenges and changes in a fashion similar to its peers within its particluar grouping. The study concluded that the Proactive firms are building a sustainable strategic advantage by being proactive and realizing that the change is creating opportunities for them within their sector and the economy as a whole. Furthermore, it was found that all of the companies, regardless of the current strategies being pursued, were increasing their proactiveness in an attempt to build competitive advantages in their industry.

How have EU-level actors responded to the increase in salience and contestation across the member states? This volume explores and explains the actors’ strategic responses and emphasises that domestic pressure has triggered both depoliticisation and politicisation. Long gone are the times when EU decisions left citizens indifferent, and when the supranational was largely irrelevant for public opinion and electoral politics across the member states. Instead, a string of existential crises has struck and unsettled the Union over more than a decade. These crises have politicised Europe, tested the endurance of the supranational system to its core, and put EU-level actors under unprecedented pressure. This volume explores how and why EU-level actors respond to the various, sometimes competing, ‘bottom-up’ demands, and challenges the view that domestic contestation necessarily limits EU-level room for manoeuvre. Instead, contributions show that domestic pressure can be perceived as either constraining or enabling, with responses, therefore, ranging from the restrained to the assertive. Driven by the survival of the Union, by the preservation of their own powers, and by different perceptions of domestic demands, actors will choose to politicise or depoliticise decision-making, behaviour, and policy outcomes at the supranational level. The volume concludes that whilst domestic pressure triggers supranational responses, such responses should not be assumed to be restraining; they may equally be empowering including for European integration itself. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of the Journal of European Public Policy.

Key insights from the colloquium are as follows:(1) the concept of a border as a line on the ground is insufficient for today's realities; (2) the concept of border security obscures larger issues of control and humane management; (3) the European Union approach to interior border management differs from that of exterior border management and may offer a useful model for insight into alternative policies and practices; (4) while the threat from terrorists is real, the over-security with regard to the border control process has generated greater problems than it may have solved; (5) a great deal of room remains for improving management of the issues in both theory and practice, including the effective use of technology, however, this is ultimately a human issue; and (6) practitioners and theorists see very different dimensions of the issues, but acknowledge the utility of colloquia such as this as a means to bring about unity of purpose and practice.
