In recent years organic sulfur chemistry has been growing at an even faster pace than the very rapid development in other fields of chemistry. This phenomenal growth is undoubtedly a reflection of industrial and public demands: not only was sulfur recently in overall surplus for the first time in the history of the chemical industry but it has now become a prin cipal environmental hazard in the form of sulfur dioxide, sulfuric acid and hydrogen sulfide. Another reason, discernible in the last fifteen years, has been the desire, on the part of individual chemists and all types of research managers, to move away from the established chemistry of carbon into the less well understood and sometimes virgin chemistries of the other elements which form covalent bonds. As a result of this movement the last decade has seen the development of sulfur chemistry into a well-organized and now much better understood branch of organic chemistry. Enough of the detail has become clear to see mechanistic interrelationships between previously unconnected reactions and with this clarification the whole subject has in tum become systema tized and subdivided. The divalent sulfur chemistry of thiols, monosulfides, disulfides and polysulfides is a large area in itself, much of it devoted to oxidation-reduction and the breakage and formation of sulfur-sulfur bonds, although interesting discoveries are now being made about the reac tivity of certain sulfur-carbon bonds. Of course, this area has its own mas sive biochemical branch involving enzymes and proteins.

Fertilizer is a vital component of strategies for expanding foodproduction. The rapid growth in population and the widening food deficits inmany tropical countries ofAsia, Africa, and Latin America call attention to those aspects of fertilization that have been neglected but are expected to yield large economic payoffs in the future. Fertilizer sulfur falls into this category. In the past fertilizer sulfur received little attention from researchers and policymakers since sulfur deficiency was not considered a serious problem. It was not a problem because of low crop yields, extensive cropping, and the incidental supply of sulfur through rain, irrigation water, manures, and sulfurcontaining fertilizers. However, the situation has changed in the last three decades. Moder nagriculture based on high crop yields, intensive cropping, improved crop varieties, and greater use of sulfur-free fertilizers and environmental regula tions restricting sulfur emissions are creating large gaps between sulfur sup ply and sulfur requirements. Sulfur deficiencies are widespread and grow ing. Consequently, the full potential of a modern agricultural system in tropical countries is not being realized. This research effort results from the recognition of the seriousness of the sulfur problem and its adverse impact on food production as well as IFDC's dedication to the development and transfer of economically ef ficient fertilizer technology to tropical countries. This study represents a comprehensive analysis ofthe technical and economic linkages between fer tilizer sulfur and food production, and it provides guidelines for future directions in fertilizer sulfur research and public policy.

ica, I considered myself an old hand: when I started to study the environment of the North Bohemian region in 1963, the ecosystemic changes and health effects result ing from extremely high concentrations and deposition of sulfurous and nitrogenous air pollutants and particulate matter could not be ignored. When I returned to the area in 1966 to work there for nearly three years as a consultant in energy and environmental affairs, I came to realize the difficulties of efficiently controlling the problem. Hiking on the crest of the Ore Mountains overlooking the valley, I saw much destruction and degradation of coniferous plantings-but I was also repeatedly surprised by the contrast of the withering tops and stunted dried-out growth of spruces and firs with the magnificent beech trees and the healthy understory of shrubs and wild flowers. I recall this impressive lesson of ecosystemic vulnerability and resistance every time I read sweeping generalizations about the environmental effects of acid deposition. At the same time, in the second half of the 1960s, I was introduced by a friend, an engineer working in analytical chemistry and biochemistry, to some of the mysteries of enzymes; this led me to nitrogenase, one of the most incredible sub stances on this planet, and to an interest in various aspects of the nitrogen cycle, which was further strengthened by my later work on the energy cost of crop production, involving inevitable comparisons between natural nitrogen fixation and Haber-Bosch ammonia synthesis.
