#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • John Grisham returns to the iconic setting of his first novel, A Time to Kill, as Jake Brigance finds himself embroiled in a controversial trial that exposes a tortured history of racial tension. “Welcome back, Jake. . . . [Brigance] is one of the most fully developed and engaging characters in all of Grisham’s novels.”—USA Today Seth Hubbard is a wealthy white man dying of lung cancer. He trusts no one. Before he hangs himself from a sycamore tree, Hubbard leaves a new, handwritten will. It is an act that drags his adult children, his black maid, and defense attorney Jake Brigance into a conflict as riveting and dramatic as the murder trial that made Brigance one of Ford County’s most notorious citizens, just three years earlier. The second will raises many more questions than it answers. Why would Hubbard leave nearly all of his fortune to his maid? Had chemotherapy and painkillers affected his ability to think clearly? And what does it all have to do with a piece of land once known as Sycamore Row? Don’t miss any of John Grisham’s gripping Jake Brigance novels: A TIME TO KILL • SYCAMORE ROW • A TIME FOR MERCY

A sequel to A TIME TO KILL He will make them pay . . . Jake Brigance has never met Seth Hubbard, or even heard of him, until the old man's suicide note names him attorney for his estate. The will is dynamite. Seth has left ninety per cent of his vast, secret fortune to his housemaid. The vultures are circling even before the body is cold: the only subject more incendiary than money in Ford County is race, and this case has both. AS the relatives contest the will, and unscrupulous lawyers hasten to benefit, Jake searches for answers to the many questions left by Seth Hubbard's death: What made him write that last-minute will leaving everything to a poor black woman named Lettie Lang? Why did he choose to kill himself on the desolate piece of land known as Sycamore Row? And what was it that Seth and his brother witnessed as children that, in his words, 'no human should ever see'? Below is a preview of the earlier sections of the summary: Chapter 1 On a wooded settlement in Clanton, Ford County, the practicalities and implications of Seth Hubbard's hanging are contemplated. He had an aggressive lung cancer and, despite two expensive divorces, he had kept possession of the timber-laden estate left to him by his father. Seth's farm-hand, Calvin Boggs, has been ordered to meet Seth at 2.00pm at an isolated bridge, to which Calvin drives with his young son. Calvin realises that Seth is hanging from a sycamore tree and calls the county sheriff. The deputies mark the area around the tree as a crime scene, but once Calvin is taken to Seth's home he discovers a note left by Seth stating that he has taken his own life and requests that there be no autopsy. Ozzie Wall, a black sheriff, recounts his memories of Seth offering to bankroll his election campaigns in cash, as the coroner and deputies take Seth's body down from the tree. Ozzie decides to further investigate Mr. Hubbard's background. Chapter 2 Jake Brigance wakes at 5.30am to fulfil his routine of getting up, heading the coffee-shop, and then onto his office. He ponders over his static career and weighs up his ambitions to become a great trial lawyer. He recounts that his best case was three years ago in the 'Hailey trial'. However, the victory in court came at the price of his Victorian home being burned down by the Ku Klux Klan and losing the family dog in the fire. Now living in a 'flimsy' house, paid-for by his insurance company, Jake kisses goodbye to his wife and daughter and contemplates the 9mm pistol he now carries in his briefcase. He recalls how only four out of a dozen of the terrorists who were involved in the harassment of Jake, and those around him, have been given sentences. Ozzie Wall keeps a deputy, Louis Tuck, outside of the Brigance home every morning for protection against any possible terrorist threat. At the coffee shop Jake talks to Deputy Marshall Prather about Seth Hubbard and wonders about Hubbard's last will and testament. Dell, the gossiping waitress, lets on that Seth Hubbard was found hanged. Jake then contemplates his rival lawyers as he walks to his office and arrives for 7.00am.

SYCAMORE ROW by JOHN GRISHAM SUMMARYOne literally event sequel of “A Time to Kill,” is “Sycamore Row”, by John Grisham who is one of the best story writers in this time. This story is about an old man, who would die because of lung cancer. The dying man did commit suicide, and that is the main strategy of this story. One of the important characters is Jake, who had faced a tragic attack, life threatening, previously. Sherriff Clanton took extra care of him and his family, wife and daughter. This struggling attorney was thinking to move from this place to where he doesn't have to carry any gun for safety and can live in peace. That's why he needed one special case where he could show his talent and earn more. The climax started when one hand written Will came to Jake, written by Seth Hubbard, an old man, where he wrote to give everything to his black maid. He trusted nobody, including his son and daughter. They did not care about their father while he was alive so there was no love between them. The name of this story is named like this as Seth hanged himself with a tree on his property that is Sycamore Row. The handwritten Will was a very conflicted one and changed the life of Jake. Black maid Lettie was not entirely sure why her Master did that. Not only Lettie, it was the question of everyone in Clanton. The Will created numerous questions, why Lettie? What was their relationship? What was his problem with his kids? When Jake was starting to investigate the case, the amount of property surprised him. It was unknown by everyone except some of his employees. It was 20 million. His kids who were never attached with him came in the story then and they wanted their share. So, they hired their own lawyers. When the lawyers, many lawyers, gather to feed, Jake had the honor of presenting the new Will. Seth chose him because he respected the Hailey defense. Another reason is that he was honest and very much reliable. When the other side offered to talk settlement, integrity-first Jake wasn't in such a rush because he wanted to stretch his payday. Judge Atlee was honest too, and powerful. He gave his support to the honesty and gave no chance to the evils in his court. The part is very interesting when Atlee clearly bowled the lawyers when they came with illegal requests in his court.Letties daughter helped Jake find the answers of the relationship between Seth and Lettie. That was an astonishing part when the answer came. It proved that the Will was written by Seth in a very clear mind and without any influence. The story has described the critical parts of the case and the war of the money between the kids who are inheritors of the property. The fact how money changes everyone was one point to be noticed. In this story, John Grisham again informed the world that he is one of the best story tellers of this time, who can offer the best crime story in this modern era.He follows the rules and applied his personal experience and knowledge in this story that directly touches people.
