From Dale Carnegie's How to Win Friends and Influence People, published in 1936, which has sold over 30 million copies to date, to the mind management programme of Professor Steve Peters' The Chimp Paradox, a concise and insightful guide to seventy of the most influential self-help books ever published An entertaining, accessible companion, for readers of self-help books and sceptics alike. The titles include classics on achieving success, confidence and happiness, mindfulness, how to change your life, self-control, overcoming anxiety and self-esteem issues and stress relief. The chronological arrangement of the titles reveals the intriguing story of how early self-improvement titles were succeeded by increasingly personality-based, materialistic titles and shows how breakout classics often influenced other titles for decades to come. Each book is summarised to convey a brief idea of what it has to offer the interested reader, while a 'Speed Read' for each book delivers a quick sense of what each writer is like to read and a highly compressed summary of the main points of the book in question. This is a work of reference to dip into, that acknowledges that some of the most powerful insights into ourselves can be found in texts that aren't perceived as being 'self-help' books, and that wisdom and consolation can be found in the strangest places.

Developing new regulation of existing genes is a major source of evolutionary novelty. In this thesis, I examine evolution of transcriptional regulation by dissecting a combinatorial regulatory circuit that governs mating-type in the ascomycete branch of the fungal lineage. I first determine the means by which four conserved transcription factors regulate mating-type in the pathogenic yeast C. albicans. I then closely compare the C. albicans circuit to that of S. cerevisiae, identifying several classes of changes that have arisen since their divergence from a common ancestor. Among the many changes identified, I focus on a group of orthologs, the a-specific genes, that is positively regulated in C. albicans, but is negatively regulated in S. cerevisiae. I demonstrate that positive regulation represents the ancestral form, and that the S. cerevisiae mode of negative regulation is a recently derived innovation. By examining the regulation of asgs in a group of 16 modern yeasts that diverged at successively later times from a common ancestor, I deduce specific, sequential changes in both cis- and trans-regulatory elements that constitute the transition from positive to negative regulation.

This book is about what science frequently dodges or even denies: subjective life as experienced by animals as well as humans. Mixing what is known from science with some novel ideas, science writer William Libaw provides a provocative thesis on the origins and evolution of consciousness. Among the ideas presented are the following: for the earliest animals that had it, subjective experience itself had Darwinian adaptiveness in a rapidly changing environment; the use of gestures and deception among apes and some birds suggests conscious concepts in their mental activity; spoken language came first from the mouths of a group of children who inherited the previously unused genetic language capability; and human males have retained the animal rutting instinct and amplified it with conceptual prurience. As the subjective world of any other creature cannot be observed directly, this book plays detective to deduce from behavior some of the concepts that play a key role in ape and human minds.--From publisher description.
