In a Louisiana assisted-living home in 1999, Paul Edgecomb begins to cry while watching the film Top Hat. His companion Elaine becomes concerned, and Paul explains to her that the film reminded him of the events of 1935, which took place when he was a prison officer, in charge of death row, what they refer to as the "Green Mile". In 1935, Paul supervises officers Brutus Howell, Dean Stanton, Harry Terwilliger, and Percy Wetmore at Cold Mountain Penitentiary. Paul is suffering from a severe bladder infection and receives John Coffey, a physically imposing but mentally challenged black man, into his custody. John had been sentenced to death after being convicted of raping and murdering two white girls. One of the other inmates is a Native-American named Arlen Bitterbuck, who is charged with murder and is the first to be executed. Percy demonstrates a severe sadistic streak, but, as the nephew of Louisiana's First Lady, he cannot be held to account; he is particularly abusive towards inmate Eduard Delacroix, breaking his fingers, killing his pet mouse Mr. Jingles, and calling him "faggot". In exchange for resigning from the penitentiary and accepting a job at an insane asylum, Percy is allowed by Paul to oversee Del's execution; at the execution, Percy deliberately avoids soaking the sponge used to conduct electricity to Del's head, leading to Del suffering a gruesome death with Paul and the others in attendance. John begins to demonstrate supernatural powers; he cures Paul's bladder infection, resurrects Mr. Jingles, and heals Melinda Moores, wife of the prison's chief warden, of a brain tumor. This last affliction he releases into Percy, who under its influence shoots prisoner William Wharton to death. Wharton had from the moment of his arrival been a troublemaker; he assaulted the guards as he was being escorted into the block, made mischief on two occasions that later caused Paul to order him restrained in the block's padded cell, groped Percy, racially insulted John, and revealed psychically to John that he is, in fact, responsible for the crime for which John was condemned. John then reveals the story psychically to Paul, and, when doing so, he also releases his supernatural energy into Paul. Meanwhile, Percy is committed to the insane asylum.

Seminar paper from the year 2015 in the subject Cultural Studies - Miscellaneous, grade: 3,0, University of Rostock, language: English, abstract: In the late 1980s and the 1990s, the time Stephen King was working on his serial novels and movie 'The Green Mile', the newspapers reported of many execution errors comparable to Kemmler's execution. Stephen King was presumably concerned by these horrible incidents so that these reports may have influenced his writing. The thought that this movie was made to enlighten and arouse the public, raises the question in which way these three executions in the movie resemble to authentic executions that took place over the years in the United States of America. To respond to this question this paper will give a summary of the movie 'The Green Mile' followed by descriptions of the three execution scenes. In the last part the three executions will be compared to real executions that took place in the USA and are discussed with regard to how accurate they are to reality. The thought of executing a person through electricity has its origin in the late 19th century. During that time technology developed very fast and people were fascinated by electricity. However, installing electrical items like street lights caused many fatal accidents. The number of deaths increased rapidly in the 1880s. Apparently the victims died within seconds without physical pain and visible marks of external forces on the bodies. Soon people thought that power generators might be useful for executions. David Hill, Governor of New York, engaged a three-member committee to proof if electricity is suitable for executions. After three years of research the result was that electrocutions caused a painless and instant death. It was seen as the most human and practical method to enforce the death penalty. The first electric chair was built in New York in 1888 (DPIC). Only two years later William Kemmler was the first person who got executed by electrocution in th

To my fellow martyrs, get yourself ready, your companion in the word and brother in the spirit Firebird Green Jr. is right back at you for the second time in two years, and he did not arrive at your number by mistake or on the magic carpet either, because it had outlasted its usefulness, retired and placed in storage with all the other outdated furniture for a better Promise that is in the high calling in Christ Jesus, the only begotten son of the most high God, who is a constant companion of the brethren and the keeper of all hope. The last time you heard from me, the magic carpet had me here and there, taken me on some very wild rides. I felt, at times, like I was riding on the back of Haley comet, after the tail had been cut off by the rings of Saturn! Listen in, audience, a female veteran that I know purchased and reviewed one of my first book, The Last Man Is Standing, and this is what she had to say: The book is interesting but you were all over the place. And make no mistake about it, she was right. I was all over the world. Listen in, saints, the Lord reflected light into my spirit on January 13, 2013, after I had been burned, pretty badly, on January 1, 2013, with a class 2 burn to the left Leg and foot, when I was attempting to cook the traditional New Years Day dinner! In the southern part of the nation, black-eyed peas and cabbages, and for the next three months, when I got up and said my morning prayer, with my leg elevated and extended, I would always add this, If not today, Lord maybe, tomorrow, and after two months, it finally started to grow a scab. After that, I knew it would not take long. Prayer had been answered and healing was on the way. In the Last Man Is Standing, God Told me to tell the whole truth about the past life that I had lived and hold back nothing, tell the good, the bad, and the ugly because it has everything to do about him. And it is his mercy and grace that endures forever. Amen. And that is what I tried to do, but now, after the life sentence that I received from God, in my last book, well, now in the The Last Man Stand and Walk the Green Mile, the sentence is death. So come along with me down the corridor of life and witness me being drawn through the passageway to my long way home, and you are welcome to join anytime. Come along! You are guaranteed not to be disappointed, and the blessing will abound.

Excerpt: The Stand is a post-apocalyptic horror/fantasy novel by American author Stephen King. It demonstrates the scenario in his earlier short story, Night Surf. The novel was originally published in 1978 and was later re-released in 1990 as The Stand: The Complete & Uncut Edition; King restored some text originally cut for brevity, added and revised sections, changed the setting of the story from 1980 (which in turn was changed to 1985 for the original paperback release in 1980) to 1990, and updated a few pop culture references accordingly. The Stand was nominated for the World Fantasy Award for Best Novel in 1979, and was adapted into both a television miniseries for ABC and a graphic novel published by Marvel Comics. The book is dedicated to King's wife, Tabitha: "For my wife Tabitha: This dark chest of wonders." The novel is divided into three parts, or books. The first is titled "Captain Trips" and takes place over nineteen days, with the escape and spread of a human-made biological weapon, a superflu (influenza) virus known formally as "Project Blue" but most commonly as "Captain Trips" (among some other...

In the thesis I explore the presence of Christian and racial elements in Stephen King's novel The Green Mile. The first chapter describes some basic theories of Christianity and its history as a background to the events and situations depicted in King's novel and film. The second chapter analyzes how Christian elements have been integrated into literature by other famous authors, to form a comparison with King's use of these motifs. The main analysis is made in the third chapter, where Christian elements in the novel are identified and parallels are drawn back to the theory of Christianity, especially regarding the character John Coffey as a Christ figure. The thesis also discusses the importance of the religious background of the author while I try to form a generalized interpretation of the novel. In addition, the film adaptation serves as a source for the analysis of visual elements of Christianity. Finally, the fourth chapter focuses on racial elements in the novel. These elements are then connected to the history of racial relationships in the United States and reflected in African-American literature, compared to that of white authors such as King, and a connection is made between the racial and religious elements of the novel as they combine to illustrate important themes in American society.

The Green Mile, Stephen King’s #1 New York Times bestselling novel, was first published twenty years ago in six original paperback installments. Inspiration for the Oscar-nominated film starring Tom Hanks about an innocent man on death row, The Green Mile is now available for the first time in e-serial form. The Mouse on the Mile is Volume Two. Paul Edgecombe’s story continues with the addition of two characters, one a new prisoner awaiting his own date with “Old Sparky,” Cold Mountain’s electric chair. He’s William “Wild Bill” Wharton, a killer with an aim to cause as much trouble as he can before his execution date. The other newcomer is a mouse. Called Steamboat Willy by the guards who first noticed him, he’s later renamed Mr. Jingles by Eduard Delacroix, another of the death row inmates who eventually takes in the mouse and makes him his pet—a bit of cold comfort for a man condemned to walk the Green Mile.

Welcome to Cold Mountain Penitentiary, home to the Depression-worn men of E Block. Convicted killers all, each awaits his turn to walk the Green Mile—the prison’s death row. This is the story, told by former guard Paul Edgecombe, of what happened there in 1932 when an unusual inmate named John Coffey arrives. Condemned for a crime terrifying in its violence and shocking in its depravity, he has the body of a giant and the mind of a child. But there’s something about Coffey that makes Paul question if this man could have committed that crime. He is a rare, gentle spirit along the Green Mile.
