The aim of this dissertation was to explore how midcareer leaders in a national, federated nonprofit are experiencing leadership. Twenty-five qualitative interviews were completed with midcareer leaders from thirteen of the largest twenty chapters of a national, federated nonprofit organization. The study was rooted in a developmental framework that sought to look at leadership development from the perspective of a midcareer leader. Midcareer nonprofit leaders develop best when they experience strategic challenges in a safe space that is supportive, allows for failure, and encourages reflection. The role of a community of trusted others was also prominent in the experience of the cohort that was interviewed. This study demonstrated the lack of intentional leadership development strategies for midcareer leaders. It advances the case for a developmental approach to the growth of midcareer leaders that strategically designs experiences and cultivates relationships that allow for the examination is questions of meaning, purpose and legacy. This study shows that midcareer is a critical time for beliefs and practices to be reexamined in order to ensure that midcareer leaders are ready to provide continuity of organizational leadership for the long term.
