Temperament has been known to have genetic underpinnings and for being stable over the course of a person's life. Depression has also been shown to have a biological component due to its association with imbalances in the brain, specifically involving the neurotransmitters serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine in areas of the brain that regulate mood. Since both temperament and depression are linked to biology, it can be hypothesized that they may be connected in some way. Research has shown a link of the melancholic temperament type with Major Depressive Disorder. The melancholic temperament consists of individuals who are high in Negative Affect and low in Positive Affect. Other temperament types such as depressive, anxious, and irritable have also been shown to increase the risk for developing mental disorders. The hyperthymic temperament has been found to be protective against developing a mood or mental disorder, and in decreasing the risk for suicide attempts.
