The Power of Critical Thinking is an introductory text for courses in critical thinking. This book covers arguments, belief and doubt, faulty reasoning, deductive and inductive reasoning, and inference; it also offers an introduction to the issues specific to both scientific and moralreasoning. The authors' presentation emphasizes the application of critical thinking skills in disciplines outside of philosophy. The colloquial and friendly tone makes a potentially difficult subject accessible to students. The addition of Canadian material has only enhanced this accessibility byproviding students with examples and illustrations that will be familiar to them.Package Contains:9780195425031 Power of Critical thinking9780195430547 Writing Philosophy

"Mastering the art of problem solving takes more than proficiency with basic calculations; it requires understanding how people use information, recognizing the importance of ideology, learning the art of storytelling, and acknowledging the important distinction between facts and values. Intended for professors, managers, entrepreneurs, and students, this guide addresses these and other essential skills. With clear prose, quotations, and exercises for solving problems in the real world, this book serves as an ideal training manual for those who are new to or intimidated by quantitative analysis and an excellent refresher for those who have more experience but want to improve the quality of their data, the clarity of their graphics, and the cogency of their arguments." -- Publisher's description.

The text emphasizes immediate application of critical thinking in everyday life and helps students apply the skills they are studying. The relevance of these skills is shown throughout the text by highlighting the advantages of basing one's decisions on a thoughtful understanding of arguments and presenting the overarching commonalities across arguments. With its conversational writing style and carefully selected examples, the book employs a consistent and unified treatment of logical form and an innovative semiformal method of standardizing arguments that illustrates the concept of logical form while maintaining a visible connection to ordinary speech. The importance of critical thinking has surged as academics in higher education realize that many students, upon entering college, lack the critical thinking skills necessary to succeed. While much has been written regarding the ‘lack’ of critical thinking, less has been written on the success of methods implemented to develop this fundamental skill. The Handbook of Research on Advancing Critical Thinking in Higher Education explores the effective methods and tools being used to integrate the development of critical thinking skills in both undergraduate and graduate studies. Due to the difficulties associated with teaching critical thinking skills to learners of any age, this publication is a crucial addition to the scholarly reference works available to pre-service and early career teachers, seasoned educational professionals, professors across disciplines, curriculum specialists, and educational administrators.

Thayer-Bacon argues that factors such as race, gender, and social status have direct bearing on philosophical inquiry: by abstracting theorists from their personal and social contexts, the absolutism of traditional critical thinking philosophies come into question. Thayer-Bacon encourages reevaluating the diversity of inquiry and suggests that diversity is a factor which constructs philosophy.

The book inquires into critical thinking through a cultural approach. Based on an ethnographic study, it compares Chinese postgraduate students’ conceptualisations and applications of critical thinking in three different settings in China and the UK. From an insider’s perspective, it analyses the intricate interplay of multiple cultural and individual factors that conditions students’ critical thinking development as they learn to write an academic thesis and to manage postgraduate learning. The book offers insights into the nature of problems that Chinese students encounter with critical thinking and envisions possibilities for the ideas for critical thinking to have a transformative power in an intercultural space. The book will primarily be of interest to academics and educators who work on critical thinking and academic writing, especially those who work with Chinese students. Scholars interested in intercultural issues in higher education may also find it relevant.
