Evaluation research findings should be a key element of the policy-making process, yet in reality they are often disregarded. This valuable book examines the development of evaluation and its impact on public policy by analysing evaluation frameworks and criteria which are available when evaluating public policies and services. It further examines the nature of evidence and its use and non-use by decision-makers and assesses the work of influential academics in the USA and UK in the context of evaluation and policy making. The book emphasises the 'real world' of decision-makers in the public sector and recognises how political demands and economic pressures can affect the decisions of those who commission evaluation research while providing recommendations for policymakers on adopting a different approach to evaluation. This is essential reading for under-graduate and post-graduate students of policy analysis and public sector management, and those who are involved in the planning and evaluation of public policies and services.

Jesus often taught in parables: earthly stories with spiritual truth. In Luke 8, he says to a large crowd "Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear," but even his own disciples had to seek further understanding. To this he replied, "The knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of God has been given to you..." With the help of the Holy Spirit, we gain understanding of biblical principles (spiritual truths) as we live out our faith every day. Jesus still speaks to us today. Do you know his voice?

This paper presents unique evidence on health workers' career choices in Ethiopia. It shows that challenges like health workers' limited willingness to work in rural areas, as well as their likelihood to migrate abroad vary substantially and are correlated with background, motivation, and job satisfaction. Governments in Africa have identified human resources for health as a priority to improve health outcomes. This study is a valuable resource to better understand health worker choices and help toward the design of more effective human resource policies. This working paper was produced as part of the World Bank s Africa Region Health Systems for Outcomes (HSO) Program. The Program, funded by the World Bank, the Government of Norway, the Government of the United Kingdom and the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI), focuses on strengthening health systems in Africa to reach the poor and achieve tangible results related to Health, Nutrition and Population. The main pillars and focus of the program center on knowledge and capacity building related to Human Resources for Health, Health Financing, Pharmaceuticals, Governance and Service Delivery, and Infrastructure and ICT.

It is an enthusiastic view of how compactified string/M-theories (plus data that may be reachable) seem to have the possibilities of leading to a comprehensive underlying theory of particle physics and cosmology, perhaps soon. We are living in a hugely exciting era for science, one during which it may be possible to achieve a real and true understanding of our physical world.

An economist's perspective on the nuts and bolts of economic policymaking, based on his experience as the Chief Economic Adviser in India. In December 2009, the economist Kaushik Basu left the rarefied world of academic research for the nuts and bolts of policymaking. Appointed by the then Prime Minister of India, Manmohan Singh, to be chief economic adviser (CEA) to the Government of India, Basu—a theorist, with special interest in development economics, and a professor of economics at Cornell University—discovered the complexity of applying economic models to the real world. Effective policymaking, Basu learned, integrates technical knowledge with political awareness. In this book, Basu describes the art of economic policymaking, viewed through the lens of his two and a half years as CEA. Basu writes from a unique perspective—neither that of the career bureaucrat nor that of the traditional researcher. Plunged into the deal-making, non-hypothetical world of policymaking, Basu suffers from a kind of culture shock and views himself at first as an anthropologist or scientist, gathering observations of unfamiliar phenomena. He addresses topics that range from the macroeconomic—fiscal and monetary policies—to the granular—designing grain auctions and policies to assure everyone has access to basic food. Basu writes about globalization and India's period of unprecedented growth, and he reports that at a dinner hosted by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, President Obama joked to him, “You should give this guy some tips”—“this guy” being Timothy Geithner. Basu describes the mixed success of India's anti-poverty programs and the problems of corruption, and considers the social norms and institutions necessary for economic development. India is, Basu argues, at an economics crossroad. As CEA from 2009 to 2012, he was present at the creation of a potential economic powerhouse.

David Spurling believes that a sociology book should enable the reader to understand social problems. Spurling uses his background, including research on the single homeless to look at sociological perspectives and research methods. The book looks at the variety of perspectives including Marxism, functionalism, feminism and neo-liberalism. His transport background, as both a worker and a lecturer, is reflected in the chapters on urbanism. A sociology book that claims to be comprehensive but ignores climate change would be nonsensical as it is the most important problem for current and future generations; therefore this book discusses this issue and what to do about it. Spurlings chapter on crime looks at the importance of crime to the victims, using statistics, so that it presents a different perspective to many other books. The chapter on race reflects the ways in which perceptions of immigration have little relationship to the actual data available and also the way in which the media has a great influence on public opinion. Spurling uses his examiner experience, as well as teaching experience, to examine the different aspects of the educational system. The chapter on religion reflects the wide variety of views on this subject. As a Quaker, Spurlings views on religion have a Quaker perspective. The hatred towards people of other religions or no religion is also examined in both contemporary and past societies. The influence of education and attitudes towards it are examined. Spurling has also included a chapter of questions and answers. This book would be ideal for first-year university students, including the University of London International Degree, as well as for A-Level students looking for different material. Learning Through Cooperation Ltd hopes that this book will provide support to anyone sitting their exams. * Our summary is short, simple and pragmatic. It allows you to have the essential ideas of a big book in less than 30 minutes. By reading this summary, you will discover the influence (sometimes counter-intuitive) that the real world has on how to search, buy and sell in the virtual world. You will also discover : why online shoppers have overlapping behaviors; why geographically distant buyers sometimes show strong similarities; why people who are different from their environment make high-potential buyers; the importance of sharing information offline about the growth of online business; how to use this knowledge to create a high-performing online business. According to Location Is (Still) Everything, a user's online activity is driven by their geographic location. There are three findings that justify the interest in location. First, two people living in different conditions and environments move in the virtual world in different ways, even if they are the same age, have the same salary and the same level of education. Secondly, a salesman will be more or less attractive to the customer depending on the distance between them. A natural offline effect, where the distance that separates the seller from the customer corresponds to the distance the customer has to travel to make his purchases. What is more counter-intuitive is that it exists online as well: a notice will be more or less important depending on where it comes from and buyers will be more inclined to make transactions with sellers who are located near them. This effect is reinforced by the cell phone: buyers are even less willing to travel when doing their research. Third, buying preferences and behavior are almost determined by where the customers live. What are the underlying origins of these real-world effects on how people search, buy and sell in the virtual world? *Buy now the summary of this book for the modest price of a cup of coffee!

The result is an analysis that is neither liberal nor conservative, hawk nor dove, isolationist nor interventionist, but cuts across the usual stereotypes to sketch the main outlines of a comprehensive world order and provide a realistic basis upon which all parties may debate policy. By taking the perspective of a century or two, rather than focusing on a snapshot of today or a view of a few years, and by comparing the next century with this one, during which over 40 million people were killed in wars and over 100 million by their own governments, Singer and Wildavsky approach their subject with a disconcerting optimism and find in contemporary prospects a hopeful model for progress toward global peace and prosperity
