This unique textbook provides the foundation for understanding and applying techniques commonly used in geophysics to process and interpret modern digital data. The geophysicist's toolkit contains a range of techniques which may be divided into two main groups: processing, which concerns time series analysis and is used to separate the signal of interest from background noise; and inversion, which involves generating some map or physical model from the data. These two groups of techniques are normally taught separately, but are here presented together as parts I and II of the book. Part III describes some real applications and includes case studies in seismology, geomagnetism, and gravity. This textbook gives students and practitioners the theoretical background and practical experience, through case studies, computer examples and exercises, to understand and apply new processing methods to modern geophysical datasets. Solutions to the exercises are available on a website at http://publishing.cambridge.org/resources/0521819652

Applied Time Series Analysis contains the proceedings of the First Applied Time Series Symposium held in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on May 14-15, 1976. The symposium provided a forum for reviewing various applications of time series analysis and covered topics ranging from nonlinear time series modeling and G-spectral estimation to multivariate autoregression estimation using residuals. Adaptive processing of seismic data and the application of homomorphic filtering to seismic data processing are also discussed. Comprised of 10 chapters, this book begins by describing the application of parametric models to the analysis and control of time series using some numerical examples. The reader is then introduced to nonlinear time series modeling; two-dimensional recursive filtering in theory and practice; and spectral estimators. Waves propagating in random media as statistical time series are also considered. The book concludes with a chapter that illustrates how the intensity of a Poisson process is estimated, with emphasis on a time series approach to the fixed signal case, invariant testing, and spline estimation. This monograph will be a useful resource for students and practitioners in the fields of mathematics and statistics, electrical engineering, and computer science.

Recent advances in brain science measurement technology have given researchers access to very large-scale time series data such as EEG/MEG data (20 to 100 dimensional) and fMRI (140,000 dimensional) data. To analyze such massive data, efficient computational and statistical methods are required. Time Series Modeling of Neuroscience Data shows how to efficiently analyze neuroscience data by the Wiener-Kalman-Akaike approach, in which dynamic models of all kinds, such as linear/nonlinear differential equation models and time series models, are used for whitening the temporally dependent time series in the framework of linear/nonlinear state space models. Using as little mathematics as possible, this book explores some of its basic concepts and their derivatives as useful tools for time series analysis. Unique features include: A statistical identification method of highly nonlinear dynamical systems such as the Hodgkin-Huxley model, Lorenz chaos model, Zetterberg Model, and more Methods and applications for Dynamic Causality Analysis developed by Wiener, Granger, and Akaike A state space modeling method for dynamicization of solutions for the Inverse Problems A heteroscedastic state space modeling method for dynamic non-stationary signal decomposition for applications to signal detection problems in EEG data analysis An innovation-based method for the characterization of nonlinear and/or non-Gaussian time series An innovation-based method for spatial time series modeling for fMRI data analysis The main point of interest in this book is to show that the same data can be treated using both a dynamical system and time series approach so that the neural and physiological information can be extracted more efficiently. Of course, time series modeling is valid not only in neuroscience data analysis but also in many other sciences and engineering fields where the statistical inference from the observed time series data plays an important role.

An Introduction to Seismology, Earthquakes and Earth Structures is an introduction to seismology and its role in the earth sciences, and is written for advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate students. The fundamentals of seismic wave propagation are developed using a physical approach and then applied to show how refraction, reflection, and teleseismic techniques are used to study the structure and thus the composition and evolution of the earth. The book shows how seismic waves are used to study earthquakes and are integrated with other data to investigate the plate tectonic processes that cause earthquakes. Figures, examples, problems, and computer exercises teach students about seismology in a creative and intuitive manner. Necessary mathematical tools including vector and tensor analysis, matrix algebra, Fourier analysis, statistics of errors, signal processing, and data inversion are introduced with many relevant examples. The text also addresses the fundamentals of seismometry and applications of seismology to societal issues. Special attention is paid to help students visualize connections between different topics and view seismology as an integrated science. An Introduction to Seismology, Earthquakes, and Earth Structure gives an excellent overview for students of geophysics and tectonics, and provides a strong foundation for further studies in seismology. Multidisciplinary examples throughout the text - catering to students in varied disciplines (geology, mineralogy, petrology, physics, etc.). Most up to date book on the market - includes recent seismic events such as the 1999 Earthquakes in Turkey, Greece, and Taiwan). Chapter outlines - each chapter begins with an outline and a list of learning objectives to help students focus and study. Essential math review - an entire section reviews the essential math needed to understand seismology. This can be covered in class or left to students to review as needed. Time-lapse (4D) seismic technology is a key enabler for improved hydrocarbon recovery and more cost-effective field operations. Practical Applications of Time-lapse Seismic Data (SEG Distinguished Instructor Series No. 16) shows how 4D seismic data are used for reservoir surveillance, how they provide valuable insight on dynamic reservoir properties such as fluid saturation, pressure, and temperature, and how they add value to reservoir management. The material, based on the 2013 SEG Distinguished Instructor Short Course, includes discussions of reservoir-engineering concepts and rock physics critical to the understanding of 4D data, along with topics in 4D seismic acquisition and processing. A primary focus of the book is interpretation and data integration. Case-study examples are used to demonstrate key concepts and are drawn on to demonstrate the range of interpretation methods currently employed by industry and the diversity of geologic settings and production scenarios in which 4D is making a difference. Time-lapse seismic interpretation is inherently integrative, drawing on geophysical, geologic, and reservoir-engineering data and concepts. As a result, this book should be of interest to individuals from all subsurface disciplines.

**Natural Time Analysis: The New View of Time**

Precursory Seismic Electric Signals, Earthquakes and other Complex Time Series

#### by **Panayiotis Varotsos,Nicholas V. Sarlis,Efthimios S. Skordas**

- Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
- Release : 2011-08-14
- Pages : 452
- ISBN : 3642164498
- Language : En, Es, Fr & De

This book deals with the theory and the applications of a new time domain, termed natural time domain, that has been forwarded by the authors almost a decade ago (P.A. Varotsos, N.V. Sarlis and E.S. Skordas, Practica of Athens Academy 76, 294-321, 2001; Physical Review E 66, 011902, 2002). In particular, it has been found that novel dynamical features hidden behind time series in complex systems can emerge upon analyzing them in this new time domain, which conforms to the desire to reduce uncertainty and extract signal information as much as possible. The analysis in natural time enables the study of the dynamical evolution of a complex system and identifies when the system enters a critical stage. Hence, natural time plays a key role in predicting impending catastrophic events in general. Relevant examples of data analysis in this new time domain have been published during the last decade in a large variety of fields, e.g., Earth Sciences, Biology and Physics. The book explains in detail a series of such examples including the identification of the sudden cardiac death risk in Cardiology, the recognition of electric signals that precede earthquakes, the determination of the time of an impending major mainshock in Seismology, and the analysis of the avalanches of the penetration of magnetic flux into thin films of type II superconductors in Condensed Matter Physics. In general, this book is concerned with the time-series analysis of signals emitted from complex systems by means of the new time domain and provides advanced students and research workers in diverse fields with a sound grounding in the fundamentals of current research work on detecting (long-range) correlations in complex time series. Furthermore, the modern techniques of Statistical Physics in time series analysis, for example Hurst analysis, the detrended fluctuation analysis, the wavelet transform etc., are presented along with their advantages when natural time domain is employed.

In this book the author will present several approaches for modelling and identification of seismic records based on formulations for source and transmission path. This will demonstrate an approach based on a criterion other that statistical goodness of fit. They will provide reasons for the success of the models and methods that are used frequently. This will provide a criterion to decide which models are good for all data sets, not just for the data at hand. Moreover, we will explain the relationships that exist between certain geophysical variables (e.g. corner frequency) and statistical quantities (e.g. zero-crossing) and use that to support our modelling and identification approaches.
