When a group of brilliant young scientists arrived in Australia's national capital after World War II to take up leading roles in the establishment of national research institutions, they commissioned Australia's leading architects to design their private houses. The houses that resulted from these unique collaborations rejected previous architectural styles and wholeheartedly embraced modernist ideologies and aesthetics. The story of how these progressive clients contributed to the innovative design of their houses brings fresh insights to mid-twentieth-century Australian domestic architecture and to Canberra's rich cultural history.

Bloomberg’s 10 Most Compelling Books to Put on Your Reading List This Spring This definitive biography of Anna Wintour follows the steep climb of an ambitious young woman who would—with singular and legendary focus—become one of the most powerful people in media. As a child, Anna Wintour was a tomboy with no apparent interest in clothing but, seduced by the miniskirts and bob haircuts of swinging 1960s London, she grew into a fashion-obsessed teenager. Her father, an influential newspaper editor, loomed large in her life, and once he decided she should become editor-in-chief of Vogue, she never looked back. Impatient to start her career, she left high school and got a job at a trendy boutique in London—an experience that would be the first of many defeats. Undeterred, she found work in the competitive world of magazines, eventually embarking on a journey to New York and a battle to ascend, no matter who or what stood in her way. Once she was crowned editor-in-chief of Vogue—in one of the stormiest transitions in fashion magazine history—she continued the fight to retain her enviable position, ultimately rising to dominate all of Condé Nast. Based on extensive interviews with Anna Wintour’s closest friends and collaborators, including some of the biggest names in fashion, journalist Amy Odell has crafted the most revealing portrait of Wintour ever published. Weaving Anna’s personal story into a larger narrative about the hierarchical dynamics of the fashion industry and the complex world of Condé Nast, Anna charts the relentless ambition of the woman who would become an icon.

For fifty years our most powerful popular culture influencers have been the high-powered editors of mass-market women’s magazines like The Australian Women’s Weekly, Woman’s Day, New Idea and the now defunct Dolly, Cleo and Cosmopolitan. It is difficult to overstate the influence that these women have had in shaping popular ideas and attitudes, feminism, and femininity in Australia via the pages of their magazines. In these interviews, they describe their lives and careers in a medium that is part of our publishing heritage. Queens of Print is a tribute to the most influential and iconic women in Australian women’s magazines. It is a snapshot of a rapidly changing industry where print is supposedly dead, and media have been disrupted. This book looks back, but also forward to consider what a magazine might be and what a magazine editor might do in future decades.

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER What Melania wants, Melania gets. The former director of special events at Vogue and producer of nine legendary Met Galas, Stephanie Winston Wolkoff met Melania Knauss in 2003 and had a front row seat to the transformation of Donald Trump’s then girlfriend from a rough-cut gem to a precious diamond. As their friendship deepened over lunches at Manhattan hot spots, black-tie parties, and giggle sessions in the penthouse at Trump Tower, Wolkoff watched the newest Mrs. Trump raise her son, Barron, and manage her highly scrutinized marriage. After Trump won the 2016 election, Wolkoff was recruited to help produce the 58th Presidential Inauguration and to become the First Lady’s trusted advisor. Melania put Wolkoff in charge of hiring her staff, organizing her events, helping her write speeches, and creating her debut initiatives. Then it all fell apart when she was made the scapegoat for inauguration finance irregularities. Melania could have defended her innocent friend and confidant, but she stood by her man, knowing full well who was really to blame. The betrayal nearly destroyed Wolkoff. In this candid and emotional memoir, Stephanie Winston Wolkoff takes you into Trump Tower and the White House to tell the funny, thrilling, and heartbreaking story of her intimate friendship with one of the most famous women in the world, a woman few people truly understand. How did Melania react to the Access Hollywood tape and her husband’s affair with Stormy Daniels? Does she get along well with Ivanka? Why did she wear that jacket with “I really don’t care, do u?” printed on the back? Is Melania happy being First Lady? And what really happened with the inauguration’s funding of $107 million? Wolkoff has some ideas...
Away with Words

- Publisher : Simon and Schuster
- Release : 2017-10-16
- Pages : 160
- ISBN : 1925384071
- Language : En, Es, Fr & De
Australian journalist Helen Hutcheon has always had a way with words and words have taken her away on incredible journeys during a 60-year career with P&O Cruises, Woman’s Day, the Australian Women’s Weekly, Vogue Living and Travelweek. Travel from the fabulous ‘tent city’ near the ruins of Persepolis where the 2,500th anniversary of the founding of the Persian Empire was celebrated, to Saigon during the Vietnam war when Woman’s Day played Santa to thousands of orphaned and refugee children, to ‘brown bagging’ in North Carolina and a bloodied ending in a search for the best curry in Fiji. Helen takes the reader across the globe as they are introduced to icons like the Shah of Iran, Princess Grace of Monaco and Audrey Hepburn, encountering people and places now gone forever. Away with Words evokes a long-gone era of journalism when writers bashed out stories on clapped-out typewriters using carbon paper to keep copies, and photographers brought their film back from the other side of the world to process it in the office dark room. Many of the people and places in this book are gone forever. It is an entertaining read for all ages, from those who will ‘remember when’ to younger people curious about ‘the good old days.’

Ivan Rijavec is an Australian architect, based in Melbourne, who continues to produce work that astounds both his peers and the wider commuinity. Though commentators find it difficult to categorise and explain his work, images are the most reliable source with which to describe it - are only a few of the terms that have been used to describe the work of this remarkable architect. Rijavec likens the design process to a movie: I see my work a a strip of film that keeps changing in the viewers mind. The appearance changes according to one's vantage point, giving inner life to the structure. If only all movies were this good.
Hypersexual City
The Provocation of Soft-Core Urbanism
by Nicole Kalms
- Publisher : Taylor & Francis
- Release : 2017-03-31
- Pages : 242
- ISBN : 1317028279
- Language : En, Es, Fr & De
Much of feminist architectural scholarship focuses on the enormous task of instating women’s experience of space into spatial praxis. Hypersexual City: The Provocation of Soft-Core Urbanism suggests this attention to women’s invisibility in sociocultural space has overlooked the complex ways in which women already occupy space, albeit mostly as an image or object to be consumed, even purchased. It examines the occupation of urban space through the mediated representation of women’s hypersexualized bodies. A complex transaction proliferates in the commercial urban space of cities; this book seeks to address the cause and consequence of the increasing dominance of gendered representation. It uses architectural case studies and analysis to make visible the sexual politics of architecture and urbanism and, in doing so, reveal the ways that heterosexist culture shapes the spaces, behaviour and relationships formed in neoliberal cities. Hypersexual City announces how examining urbanism that operates through, and is framed by, sexual culture can demonstrate that architecture does not merely find itself adrift in the hypersexualized landscape of contemporary cities, but is actively producing and contributing to the sexual regulation of urban life.
