The author was motivated to write this important book because currently there is no systematically-written document on the ZIKV disease, which could serve at this crucial moment as a textbook for medical students, physicians, nurses, and other healthcare providers as well as a reference book for basic researchers, professors, and the general public. The original concept of ZIKV-Charnolopathy due to compromised mitochondrial bioenergetics in highly vulnerable (neural progenitor cells, spermatocytes, oocytes etc.) cells and its amelioration by physiological and/or pharmacological interventions is based on years of research experience. This book describes unique organ and disease-specific Charnoly body (CB) inhibitors, charnolophagy inducers, CB sequestration inhibitors, and chanolophagosome stabilisers as promising charnolopharmacotherapeutics. They are meant to aid in the prevention and treatment of the ZIKV-linked diversified spectrum of neurodevelopmental anomalies (embryopathies) in newborn infants and Guillain Barre Syndrome (GBS) in adults. Clinical management of ZIKV-induced GBS employing IV immunoglobulin and plasmapheresis (plasma exchange) is also described.

Abstract : Background: Nigeria is not insulated from the global threat of Zika virus disease (ZVD) because of international travel and the presence of Zika-virus-carrying mosquitoes in the country. A paucity of studies exists concerning knowledge of ZVD among at-risk populations. Thus, the necessity for assessment of knowledge of ZVD among reproductive-age women in general outpatient setting. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 377 reproductive-age women attending a Nigerian tertiary hospital's general outpatient clinic. Their knowledge of ZVD was assessed using a structured questionnaire. A chi-square test was used to assess the relationship between participants' sociodemographics and ZVD knowledge. Results: The participants' median age was 27.0 ± 7.19 years. Though 68.97% of participants were aware of ZVD, only 23.85% of those had good knowledge of ZVD. Their median knowledge score was 57.14%. Although the Zika virus was identified in the late 1940s, a mass outbreak did not occur until recently. Because most of the world is not immune to this virus, it spreads very quickly. Readers discover the history of the Zika virus, facts about its recent spread, the symptoms of the disease, and ways people can protect themselves against it. Full-color photographs and engaging sidebars augment this detailed discussion of a disease that is still mysterious to much of the general public.

The considerable number of viral infectious disease threats that have emerged since the beginning of the 21st century have shown the need to dispose global and coordinated responses to fight properly and efficiently against them. Severe acute respiratory syndrome (2003), avian influenza in humans (2005), A(H1N1) pandemic influenza (2009), Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) (2012 onward) and Ebola virus disease (2014-2015) are some of the most important examples. The latest emerging and devastating threat was Zika virus, an arbovirus that provoked more than 500,000 suspicious cases in the Americas in 2016 and notable processes of social and medical alarms due to the evidence of a causal link between Zika virus and several congenital injuries, like microcephaly, as well as due to its association with neurological disorders such as Guillain-Barré syndrome in adults (PAHO, 2017). In the framework of this global response and multistrategic approach, the purpose of this Research Topic is to provide updated information and novel researches about control strategies, encompassing virological, entomological and epidemiological data, in order to reach the triad of protagonists of transmission cycles (virus, mosquitoes and humans).

The aim of health protection is to prevent and manage outbreaks of communicable and environmental diseases, and to make us better at responding to emergencies and disasters. This includes working with diseases and injuries from environmental hazard exposures and climate change. Essentials for Health Protection: Four Key Components is a guide to the reality of the field, and a discussion of how we can improve our present and future. Based on public health theories and illustrated by relevant examples, this book is founded on the experience gained from the long-established CCOUC Ethnic Minority Health Project in China. It covers the four key areas identified by the Commonwealth Secretariat in its 'Health Protection Policy Toolkit'; climate change adaptation and mitigation, communicable disease control, emergency preparedness, and environmental health. With the aim to strengthen regional, subnational, national and global health protection, it also looks at health impact assessment in these areas. Discussing the health protection spectrum from mitigation, interventions and response, this book is a current and comprehensive guide to the field. Looking forwards, it discusses the latest controversies and dynamics and how they might change the reality of health protection practices and development. Essentials for Health Protection: Four Key Components is the ideal introductory to intermediate level textbook and reference book for healthcare professionals, fieldworkers, volunteers and students who are interested in promoting health and emergency and disaster risk reduction.

Behind every disease is a story, a complex narrative woven of multiple threads, from the natural history of the disease, to the tale of its discovery and its place in history. But what is vital in all of this is how the disease spreads and develops. In The Atlas of Disease, Sandra Hemple reveals how maps have uncovered insightful information about the history of disease, from the seventeenth century plague maps that revealed the radical idea that diseases might be carried and spread by humans, to cholera maps in the 1800s showing the disease was carried by water, right up to the AIDs epidemic in the 1980s and the recent Ebola outbreak. Crucially, The Atlas of Disease will also explore how cartographic techniques have been used to combat epidemics by revealing previously hidden patterns. These discoveries have changed the course of history, affected human evolution, stimulated advances in medicine and shaped the course of countless lives.

This book gathers contributions by 39 international specialists on well-known but neglected mosquito-borne diseases. The authors highlight pathogens that are increasingly being spread worldwide by various mosquito species, a situation worsened further by migration and tourism. The book addresses significant agents of diseases like AIDS, dengue, Zika virus, malaria and even cancer, and the risk of transmission via mosquito-related vectors. In addition, it examines important means of preventing the outbreak of related diseases by using insecticides and/or repellents. A particular focus is on the unique and sophisticated mouthparts of bloodsucking species, which allow them to feed on blood in an undisturbed manner, and by means of which agents of disease can enter potential human and animal hosts. In brief, the book provides a broad range of information for a wide readership, including graduates, teachers and researchers in the fields of parasitology, virology, tropical medicine and microbiology, as well as practitioners and healthcare officials.
